Lucky Lucky George George Tallies Tallies in in Stakes Stakes Prep; Prep; Mr. Mr. Fantastic Fantastic Popular Popular Downs Downs Victor Victor Outruns Princeton At Garden State Victor in Lancaster Purse And His Three Closest Foes Are Delaware Valley Hopefuls By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden. N. J.. May 6.— P. and W. Stables Lucky George, who is pointing for next Saturdays 5,000 added Delaware Valley Stakes, qualified nicely for that event when he sped to victory in the 0,000 Lancaster Purse here this afternoon. The three-year-old gelded son of Gallois — Rosepomp. by Jamestown, was tiring through the last sixteenth, but at the finish he was a length and one-half to the good. Harford Stables Princeton was away in a tangle, then was forced to be steadied while attempting to get through on the turn. He finally located racing room, then closed fastest to be second. Russel RCur-leys Supper Money was third and William G. Helis Jr.s Pearl Prince was fourth. Lucky George raced the three-quarters of a mile in 1:11% and paid .40. He was an easy winner in his previous race at Gulfstream Park, and this was his first start since then. Manual N. Gonzalez was the victorious jockey. The sun occasionally peeped through the cloudy skies during most of what was a perfect day for the sport as the host organization settled into normal stride after its big opening Saturday. The official turnstile count was 18,730. Middle Distance Thriller One of the most exciting races of the young Jersey season developed when a good field of older horses clashed in the Belair Purse. From the beginning Tjf the mile and one-sixteenth to the top of the stretch, at least four horses raced abreast head and head, and, as they swept into the far turn, there were five in the six-horse field who were locked in a nose and nose struggle. While this early battle was taking place, the wise veteran, George Hettinger, sat back and cooked without any effort to join in the killing fight on the pace. He was astride Brandywine Ctables Countermand, and he circled his field, found them weary from the early activity, and drew away through the final stages to win by three lengths. Countermand recently raced in the Laurel Handicap. After that. effort he was i shipped to Brandywine Farm, near Dela-ware Park, and he was shuttled here for this engagement. An "old man" among the apprentices riding here accounted for the fourth race i when Cisley Stables Lord Ruler scored under the handling of Eugene Monacelli a 24-year-old Pittsburgh, Pa., reinsman It was Monacellis second winner in 26 mounts. His initial score came last June at Suffolk Downs, but he suffered a serious injury in a training accident and his career was temporarily interrupted. He is under contract to Sidney Jacobs, who saddled the winner. Sahara Ranchs Foxing finished second while Courtney Burtons Careful Maid was thud. Time for the six furlongs was 1:12% and, probably because of Monacellis appearance in the saddle, the winner was overlooked and returned 1.40 to his backers. Calumet Farm sent out one of its Preak-ness and Belmont Stakes candidates for the Riverside Purse, run as the fifth race, and Simon Kenton quite conclusively indicated that hell hardly rate a chance to start. The three-year-old son of Bull Lea Near Miss, by Chance Shot, was installed the favorite in the field of eight and for a time he appeared ready to bring joy to his backers. He was allowed to settle on the backstretch, took the lead on the turn, but through the stretch he was outrun and outgamed by Raritan Stables Hello June-dear. Sammy Boulmetis, who was completing a double on the Stymie filly, exer- cised fine judgment. His mount led down the Backstretch, but when she was challenged by the Calumet colt, he wisely sat * still and waited until early in the stretch before asking for a top effort.
