GENE MARKEY — Owner of Calumet Farm, which will be honored today at Arlington Park in observance of the silver anniversary of its first winner. Warren Jr., who captured the first race at the suburban northwest side track on June 27, 1932. Todays Arlington Feature And Post-Race Ceremony to Observe Stables Milestone By JOE HIRSCH ARLINGTON PARK.-Arlington Heights, 111., June 26. — Calumet Farm, which has enjoyed as much success in racing thoroughbreds over the past two decades as any stable in America, will celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of its first victory tomorrow with appropriate ceremony. It was on June 27, 1932, that the two-year-old colt, Warren Jr., won a maiden race on opening* day at this track for the late sportsman, financier and master of Calu-l iet Farm, Warren Wright. In observance of the occasion, the feature race on tomorrows program will be named "The Calumet Farm Purse," and sterling silver gifts of a personal nature will be presented to Ben and Jimmy Jones, general manager and trainer, respectively, Continued on Page She Honor Calumet on 25th Anniversary Stable s First Win At Arlington Park Name Todays Feature Race * In Observance of Occasion-Joneses to Attend Ceremony Continued from Page One of the Calumet racing stable. The presentations will be made by Mrs. William T. Young Jr., wife of the president of Arlington Park. In addition, Benjamin F. Lindheimer, executive director of Arlington Park, will present Mrs. Gene Markey, present owner of Calumet, with a sterling silver gift in absentia. Mrs. Markey, recovering from a recent operation, will be unable to be pres- Y ent Others in the winners circle after the running of the feature will be Betty and Peggy Jones, the wives of Ben and Jimmy. Since that first victory with Warren Jr. Calumet horses have earned 3,435,552 including June 25 and have registered 1,541 victories. Calumet Farm is the only American stable to earn ,000,000 or more in purses in a single season, and has accomplished this feat five times. Last year, Calumet was the leading stable in the country with a total of ,057,383. Six Kentucky Derby Winners The stable holds many other records, far too numerous to itemize. Among the major ones are a record six Kentucky Derby winners Whirlaway, Pensive, Ponder, Citation, Hill Gail and Iron Liege; leading money-winning gelding Armed — 17,475, and leading money-winning race mare Bewitch — 62,605; worlds first winner j f ,000,000 Citation— ,085,760 ; leading American breeders 12 times, the last 10 in succession, and holder of the single season record of ,060,590; leading breeder of . winners of 00,000 or more 36 . Most of Calumets success has come since the stable was under the supervision of Ben and Jimmy Jones, who officially went to work for Warren Wright on September 1, 1939. Ben Jones was Americas leading money-winning trainer for four years, while Jimmy led the list for three years, in addition to holding the all-time record for purses earned in a single season by horses he saddle ,334,805. Under the Joneses, Calumet has produced two Triple Crown winners in Whirlaway and Citation and five winners of the "Horseof the Year" award Whirlaway, twice; Twilight Tear, Armed and Citation. This year the stable, could have its greatest .season. To date its horses have earned purses worth 23,825, with six months of racing still to come.* WARREN WRIGHT and COL. MATT J.
