OFF AT 5:01 EASTERN STANDARD TIME. Start good. Won driving; second and third the same. OILED broke alertly but sharply to the inside, drew into a clear lead when straightened away, saved ground while being rated and was all out to hold M0RS£ FLASH safe. OILED survived a stewards inquiry for alleged interference on leaving the starting gate. MORSE FLASH broke fast but to the outside, was quickly straightened out to follow within striking distance of the winner and, while unable to reach that one, was clearlv best of the others. MOWLEESHA had no apparent mishap in an even effort. JOHN B. was through early. WEE SOLERA was shuffled back at the start. UNCLE PETE broke in at start. HOWDY MAN, far back for the first half mile, moved up between horses on rounding the second turn, cut to the inside on entering the stretch and, with a belated rush, wore down INVALIDATE in the closing strides. The latter, unhurried early, moved up steadily on the outside to gain command between calls in the stretch but had little left to repel the belated bid of the winner. PEGGYS BRANDY worked his way up on the outside following a slow beginning and finished strongly. SET SHOT and JUDGE RAY K. were used up in Vying for the early lead. HOMEPLACE, slow to settle in stride, moved up boldly along the inner rail until blocked on entering the stretch, was brought out between horses when straightened away and, under pressure, was up near the end. GREEK SWORD forced the early pace while in hand, raced slightly wide and narrowly missed. BY FAR made all the pace under good rating, saved ground and succumbed only slightly in the late stages. RAINBOW, steadied along while saving ground early, was eased out between horses on the second turn to make her bid, responded to pressure in the stretch to gain command and just lasted over JEFFREY J. S. The latter, badly outrun through the initial quarter mile, swung wide when rallying and just missed. INAHMOUD held on fairly well after showing the way to midstretch.
