Torpid, Overwhelming Choice To Capture N.Y. Cane Stakes YONKERS, N. Y., June 26.— Sherwood Farms Torpid, rated the greatest racing prospect since Billy Direct, is the overwhelming pre-race choice to capture the third presentation of the William H. Cane Stake for three-year-old sidewheelers, which headlines the nine-race card at Yonkers Raceway Thursday night. The Cane will be the richest event thus far this season with a total gross of 6,952.50, and it has attracted a bumper field of 17, thus forcing the track to split the race into tyvo divisions with a final dash later in the evening for the biggest end of the purse. The preliminary Cane divisions will be offered as the third and fourth races, each contest to have a value of 3,390.50. The first six finishers in each heat will return to the track about an hour later in the sixth-race finale, worth 0,171.50. Nine horses, headed by the speedy Torpid, will match strides in the first half of the Cane and eight will have a go at it in the second half. Torpid, unbeaten in three starts this year and holder of the all-time two-year-old speed mark of 1:58, is trained and will be driven by Johnny Simpson, who has made a specialty of winning the big. stakes at Yonkers the past couple of seasons.
