The French-bred covered a mile and one-sixteenth over the grass to complete a double for his owner and trainer Wilile Hughes, who had been represented by Moss Green in the earlier hurdle event. •Striving desperately to withstand the bid of Rafty, and failing by only a half iength, was King Ranchse Damocles, a rank outsider in the field at 43-to-l. Behind him was a gap of two lengths back to Courtney Burtons Roman Battle, with Mrs. E. Eugenia Bankheads Jabneh fouth as the favorite with a crowd of 12,177. Rafty was capably handled by Augie Catalano and completed the course in 1:45 as a choice. When Cockfield Stables Spin was taken back in the run to the first turn, Jabneh and Damocles were left to contest the top spot. They changed position several times during the running but remained closely lapped into the stretch, where the former faltered and Damocles endeavored to draw clear. Rafty, however, had other plans and, after joining Damocles from the outside, continued his charge for the victory. Jabneh and Damocles Due! Of the top four horses, all but Damocles have been made eligible for the 5,000 added Sussex, which is at the mile and three-eighths distance. Others in todays field who are eligible for the race are Spin and Mrs. J. R. H. Thourons Happy New Year, who showed nothing this afternoon. Locally-owned Chit Chat, sporting the silks of Mrs. E. Eugenia Bankhead, gained his first victory, since Florida when he took the six-furlong Iron Maiden Purse, honoring the dam of Iron Liege, this years Derby winner. The gray Chit Chat, strongly handled by Mike Gonzalez, staved off the late surge of Christiana Stables Quarter Deck to prevail by a half length in 1:11 Mrs. Herb Boorses veteran sprinter*. Uncle Ev, a winner of five races last season, gained his initial victory in seven starts this year when he took, the second race with six furlongs in 1:12%. A .60 favorite,- Uncle Ev completed a Daily Double which was worth 5.20 to those who coupled him with Mrs. Mary Robinsons Mighty Bout, favorite in the opener. Jockey Scott Riles suffered what an early examination suggested was a fractured left collarbone when Foxspur felb with him during the running of the hurdle race. He was removed to Delaware Hospital for further examinations and X-rays. Tom Walsh, who fell from Patrick Begorra in the same race, was reported to have been uninjured.
