ROUGH TIME UNEXPECTEDLY Success in Magothy Purse One of Several Surprises at Laurel Park. Takes Measure of Gay Balko and Moon Harvest Kievson Triumphant in Hectic Finish. LAUREL, Md., Oct 6. Rough Time, sporting the silks of J. Y. Christmas and making his third start of his racing career was winner of the best race furnished for the third day of the Maryland State Fair meeting at Laurel this afternoon when he accounted for a sprint styled the Magothy, which served as the headliner on a card that was mostly given over to performers of the cheapest grade. Listed fourth on the program and fashioned for two-year-olds of Maryland breeding, he was opposed by eight others, and his score, marking the second success in three attempts, came as one of the many surprises that occurred during the afternoon. Coming from behind, he took the measure of A. G. Vanderbilts Gay Balko, which,, racing coupled with Irrepressible, ruled a pronounced favorite for the contest, which had decision at five and one-half furlongs, while third went to Moon Harvest of the J. W. Y. Martin stable, and Irrepressible finished fourth in front of five others. In the Magothy Purse a three and one-half minute delay obtained before the youngsters could be caught in alignment, .and it found Gay Balko racing out to the lead the way, with Rough Time holding to second position and Moon Harvest third. Gay Balko was under stiff urging as he led the way down the far side of the track, and L. Fallon was unable to get the colt clear, holding but a head advantage over the Christmas colt as the turn was reached. Back of these Moon Harvest was racing clear of the others, and he made no serious move to close in on the leaders. Gay Balko was saving much valuable ground as he continued in the lead, but Rough Time was racing so close to his throatlatch that he could not gain a second breath. With the stretch reached, Gay Balko began to falter and Rough Time was soon past to come to the finish with a two lengths margin. Gay Balko saved the place by a similar distance, with Moon Harvest a length before Irrepressible. One of the best finishes of the afternoon came with the decision of the fifth race that engaged ten middle distance performers, and it was the silks of E. K. Bryson in their first success here when Kievson was returned winner in a hectic finish. His score was the second of the day for jockey R. Root and it was by a half length that he led Mrs. E. Denemarks Knights Fancy to the end of the mile and one-sixteenth journey with W. Elliotts Xandra beaten a like margin for the place as she took the measure of the seven others.
