. ....... Here and There v - on the Turf Remsen May Draw Good Field J War Glory Tops Johnson Hopes j Bottle Cap May Give Trouble j Futurity Proved Bough Contest j ....... - Two-year-olds will occupy the top spots at both Jamaica and Laurel Saturday with the renewals of the Remsen and Richard Johnson Handicaps, both at six furlongs. The Metropolitan Jockey Club is adding ,500 to its race, whereas the Maryland State Fair, Inc., is offering- ,500, an increase of ,000 over the outlay of a year ago. Numerous youngsters are eligible to both races, but that will not prevent either of them from I attracting large and perhaps good fields. I Probably the Remsen will mark the return j to campaigning in New York of Maedic, the Saratoga two-year-old champion, whose lone performance since winning the Hopeful was in the Eastern Shore Handicap at Havre de Grace. In that event the son of Bostonian 1 and Little Fire was called upon to shoulder I 126 pounds, but it was too much against j War Admiral, Orientalist, Rex Flag and Bottle Cap, although he put up a strong battle against all but the Glen Riddle colt, which ran away with the race. In the Remsen the Maemere Farm colt again must take up top weight of 126 pounds, but his opposition may not be as keen as it was in the Eastern Shore. C. V. Whitneys Flying Cross, which came from well back to gain third place in the Futurity and might have been second over Privileged in another stride or two, may be the second high weight among the Remsen starters, his assignment from John B. Campbell having been 119 pounds. Others that may start in Jamaicas first stake event include Belair Studs Riparian, Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Night Bud, Green-tree Stables Eli Yale and Tattered, Benjamin Lissbergers Juliet W., Milky Way Farms Dogaway, J. T. Taylors Planetoid, Wheatley Stables Melodist, and J. E. Wide-ncro Optic Night Bud and the two fillies, Juliet W. and Planetoid, are the only ones of this list that were not Futurity contestants. Such a field should have the effect of attracting a good crowd to Jamaica, especially with the Belgrade Stakes for high class sprinting platers as a companion feature- . War Admiral, considered j by many observers as the second best two-year-old in the country by virtue of his sensational victory in the Eastern Shore Handicap, in which he ran the six furlongs in 1:11 to win by five lengths, naturally tops the Johnson Handicap field, and the son of Man o War and I finish Up will carry 126 pounds. Ocean Roll, which scored a surprise victory over Rex Flag and Orientalist, Monday, at the Maryland course, doesnt happen to be among the Johnson cligiblcs. The writer still hazards the opinion that Bottle Cap is one of the five best two-year-olds developed this season and but for his inability to get into his stride early the son of Bostonian and Trig would have been much more effective than he has been in the sprint races in which he has been engaged. In the Kastern Shore the Chicago-owned colt would have been second in another few strides, as he came from far back in the stretch. As the Johnson is only six furlongs, it is difficult to conceive that he will be able to give War Admiral a tussle because of the latters high early speed, but he should give the rest of them a stiff fight for secondary honors in the drive through the stretch. When two-year-old races are stretched out. Bottle Cap should be much more effective and this may be proved in the. Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap later in the Laurel meeting. That race is at a mile. Advocates of straightaway racing for two-year-olds, saying it eliminates interference and rough riding, are unable to bring out Saturdays running of the Futurity as an example. Theoretically, the seventeen starters in the Futurity should have finished in the respective positions across the track in which they were started, but the large field began jamming right after the start and continued that way for the greater part of the race, with Pompoon being powerful enough to overcome the interference he suffered in the opening quarter mile. Privileged was another that met trouble and he probably meted out some later as he battled his way to a clear running position on the inside after he had started from an outside stall. Racing around the turn has been remarkably clean at Belmont Park, as the stewards supervised the riders closely, but it is very difficult for the officials to discern foul XU . .i f I :! w . The argument that straightaway running is best for two-year-olds because it gives them equal chances does not seem strong enough to offset the publics demand for races which can be seen plainly. i i q juJ - i . i i i i i a i i i I
