LONG BRANCH OPENS TODAY Semi-Final Meeting of Year in Ontario New Racing Secretary Cards Allowance Races. TORONTO, Ont, Oct 6. Racing resumes in Toronto with the opening of the seven-day meeting of the Long Branch Jockey Club, Limited, Wednesday. The West End plant and its efficient staff is in readiness to supply excellent sport during the meeting which is the semi-final one in Ontario for the year, being followed only by Dufferin Park. Consequently patrons have shown an eagerness to see as much of the sport as possible before the long winter months set in. The plant has been improved since the previous meeting, principally the new walk from the south end of the track to the grandstand and a new press box in a splendid location on top of the grandstand. In compiling his book of conditions for the seven-day period the newly-appointed racing secretary, Patrick C. Galliger, has catered to horses in all classes, from the handicap division to the lowliest type of platers. Among the races are many that are under allowance conditions, a type of contest popular with horsemen. In addition Galliger plans to card several races for the better-class claiming platers within a price range of ,000 to ,500. These will be alternated daily between sprint and distance affairs. Despite the fact that the track was inundated during the heavy rains Tuesday morning, track superintendent Thomas Clark promises that the course will be in good shape for the opening.
