I LAUREL PARK TURF NOTES Jockey Robert Merritt, who recently severed his connections with the Howe Stable, joined the local riding brigade and will remain for the balance of the season. Jockey Lester Balaski, who was suspended for rough riding during the Havre de Grace meeting, resumed his vocation in the saddle Saturday. The first issue of the condition book for the thirty-three days meeting of the Texas Jockey Club, operating Arlington Downs, were distributed among the horsemen at Laurel, last week. Eight stakes, topped by the Waggoner Memorial Handicap, valued at 5,000. are to be run before the termination of the meeting. Fred Hayward, secretary of the Maryland Racing Commission, was on hand to accept license applications from jockeys and trainers. With the "Daily Double" form of wagering set for the first and third races, a limit of twelve starters has been placed on the fields for those particular events. In other races fourteen starters will be accommodated. Douglas Geddes, who is in charge of entrance gates at Hialcah Park and several tracks in New York, is serving in a similar capacity at Laurel. Fourteen claims were filed during the eleven-day meeting recently concluded at Havre de Grace. The highest price was paid Mrs. E. Dene-mark for Two Broads, which was obtained for ,500. War Glory, trained by F. A. Carreaud, was placed in training at Laurel Park last week. The former handicap star has been out of commission for almost a year. Discovery, star of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt stable, has been shipped to Sagamore Farm in the Worthington Valley. George Arvin is training Candy Prince and Black Mistress for Mrs. H. T. Archibald, and Wise Prince for Felix Spatola. The horses recently arrived from Narragansctt Park.
