VETERAN RIDERS IN SPOTLIGHT Earl Pool and Mack Garner Pilot Winners at River Downs Course. Former Astride Wise Beauty In Trinclpal Race on Program Latter Guides Burl to Victory in Opening Event. CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct 23. Reminiscences of the golden days in this section were revivetf at "River Downs this afternoon when Earl Pool and Mack Garner, two of the veteran riders , of "the country, gave exhibitions of their old-time skill that carried them to many important and popular triumphs a decade ago. Garners .display of horsemanship came with the opening event and Fool, who also was chalking up his first victory of the meeting, gave his younger opponents a lesson in the Price Hill Purse, fifth and principal event. Pool piloted Wise Beauty to an easy and popular victory at the end of six furlongs, with Busy Lutrecia carrying oft second honors, and Lady Dedlock third. Miss Bonnie, the second choice, which was ridden by Mack Garner, saved fourth from Hicena, Lac-ha-Carolyn and Miss Ivory. - Busy Lutrecia was rushed to the front, but" Pool had the winner within striking distance and, shortly after rounding the far turn, he drove her into the lead. Increasing her advantage under the veterans good handling, she came to the final furlong three lengths in the van, and the finish found her well in hand and maintaining her lead before Busy Lutrecia, which led Lady Dedlock by five lengths for second. Miss Bonnie was blocked when she attempted to get through on the Inside of Lady Dedlock approaching the final furlong. With the exception of Hicena, which was through after racing a half mile, the other fillies were always far back. COLD WEATHER PREVAILS. Cold, threatening weather prevailed, but despite it, a good-sized crowd was present. A light rain early this morning kept the track from improving, and it was in a slow condition.., The first of the feature races resulted in another mild -surprise when Courtneys Pet, lasted to beat the heavily-backed Ilchester by a neck. Pipson was third, with Brophy, the second choice, saving fourth from Blagden, Altus Nuba and Domino Player. Pipson was rushed into a good lead in the first quarter, but Yager had the winner in second place. Approaching the final quarter Courtneys Pet was in the van. During the run through the stretch Ilchester was sent through on the inside and in the final sixteenth engaged the winner, but tired slightly in the last stride. "Uncle" Mack Garner rode his first winner of the meeting, and his older brother, Harry, saddled his first when A. Edwards Burl lasted to beat,BoId General by" a head at the end of the six furlongs in the first Third went to Moandmo, with Flaming Torch, the choice, a badly beaten sixth among a field of nine two-year-old colts and geldings. Joaney B. proved much the best of nine others that had not won a race this year when she accounted for the three-quarters second event, for which Sturdy Boy was the favorite. Leeoran was second, and Dixie Flapper, a fielder, finished third. Saved while Sturdy Boy and Celtic Lady dominated the pace for a half mile, Joaney B., which was ridden by Robert Montgomery, went into the lead entering the stretch and, increasing her advantage steadily, reached the finish six lengths before Leeoran, which led Dixie Flapper by some three lengths for second. Gamaliel won his first race In several months when he was an easy". and popular victor in the third race, also bver six furlongs. Thunder Lou was second and Princess Pyre third. Saved while Thunder Lou, Rplanda and Wise Cross were showing the way, the winner, which was ridden by Willie Farrell, was sent through on the inside to wear down Thunder Lou in the final furlong
