HERTZ JUVpNIEE IMPRESSES CbunV"Atias Displays. Ganieness in Empires All-Age, Race. Reigh Count Youngster Scores Surprising Victory New .York: Favorites . Again Have Bad Day. . NEW YORK, N. Y.,;Oct 23. Count Atlas, juvenile son of Reigh Count Frizelle, carried the silks of Mrs. John Hertz to victory at the Hilltop course today in a fashion to indicate he will bring, a bit more fame to his illustrious sire before he is through racing. It was a race of one mile and seventy yards for all ages, and five of the six starters were two-year-olds. Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Duel took second place from M. Marmor-sfe,ins Swift Lad, and William Woodwards Riparian was a distant fourth. After warm weather most of the week there was a decided drop in temperature and it reduced the attendance somewhat, but the crowd was both large and enthusiastic. The favorites still had rather scant pickings and the victory of Count Atlas was one of the surprises of the afternoon. The six engaged-left on the same stride and Riparian was showing the way at the first turn, but Count Atlas was close up and they were destined to run along lapped most of the way. Swift Lad was in third place, three lengths back, and then came Avenal, which was rather slow to find racing stride. Riparian, showing the way, was under restraint, but when Count Atlas hung to him so stubbornly, Horn was soon forced to shake up the son of Sir Gallahad III. It was of no avail, and Count Atlas, never faltering, raced him into submission. In the meantime Duel was making up ground and, racing wide in the stretch, ran down the Woodward colt to finish at the heels of Count Atlas and Just a neck before Swift Lad, which also outlasted Riparian. The race run by Avenal was a dull one, while Abbots Trick, the three-year-old of the field, was last all the -way. DOUBLE FOR MRS. HERTZ. The Milibrook Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, brought a "double" for Mrs. John Hertz silks, when Her Reigh, another son of Reigh Count, in a good game finish, took the measure of Samuel. Deutchs Sun Archer, and well back of the pair Beefsteak easily beat Night Sprite, the only other starter, and the favorite of the field. This gave Sammy Renick his second winning mount of the day. It was also another upset for Night Sprite was the choice of the small field. He was taken up at the break when slightly shut off and showing no speed at any time, was last all through the running. Beefsteak was the one to cut out the running, and in the early racing the Bradley cast-off was two lengths clear with Her Reigh racing along in second place and Sun Archer third. Her Reigh had the outside position and going to the stretch turn he circled around Beefsteak, while Sun Archer slipped through on the inside. Then a rare duel ensued through the stretch, in which Sun Archer was in rather close quarters, to be beaten i .a neck. After the finish Renick was called into the stand and there was a delay before the finish was made official. Trainer R. McGarvey granted R. Kastner permission to remain here for the final week of the meeting. He will then report to the stable at Narragansett Park.
