SPEARMAN PROVES SUPERIOR Gives Excellent Performance After Encountering Misfortune in Last Start. TORONTO, Ont, Oct 23. Spearman, three-year-old gelded son of Gaffsman and The Wishing Well; racing for the Four Ls Stable, accounted for the running of the Varsity Handicap in handy fashion when he led to the finish by a length and one-half margin the Erindale Stables Black Falcon. Third place went to the D. and M. Stables Hittie, winner of the Little Saratoga Handicap, three and one-half lengths back and two lengths before H. C. Hatchs Penabud. Spearman was ridden by F. Dougherty and after having the misfortune of having the saddle slip in his last start, came right back and won in handy fashion. The largest week-day crowd of the meeting was in attendance for the semi-final days sport which was conducted oyer a heavy racing strip. Spearman was rated In close attendance of the pace for the first half mile, moved into command on the outside as they left the back stretch and, drawing clear as they turned into the stretch, had no difficulty in holding off Black Falcon. The latter worked his way forward from a slow beginning and closed gamely but was unable to overtake the leader. Hittie cut out the running for the first half mile then gave way to the winner leaving the back stretch and dropped back to third place in the final quarter mile.
