HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. improvement of the breed and the conduct of the sport. Keenclands inaugural meeting of nine days ends today with its directors and many stockholders and well-wishers very happy in the fact that it has been a winner, not only from a sporting standpoint but from a financial one as well. Although it is going into its final day with the prospect of inclement weather and the counter-attraction of a football game in a community of less than a "100,000 persons, Keeneland has had only one losing day and that was last Friday, when the rain fell steadily. The wagering average will be approximately 0,000 daily, which, with a paid attendance averaging nearly 6,000 persons, will give the Keeneland Association a small but unexpected profit, contrary to reports in the East that the inaugural meeting was proving; an utter failure. Keeneland had three-horse fields in three of its four stakes, the last of which is on tap today, but interest was did not flag and the new Blue Grass course definitely is a success and apparently on the road to the destination predicted by its sponsors. A plan of the American Thoroughbred Breeders Association is to operate a farm for the purpose of establishing and operating a laboratory for research and investigation of diseases of the horse. This idea means little if anything to the man in the street who is trying to figure out the next winner and what his odds will be, yet it is very important to racing. Breeders aim to improve the horse, but theyve yet to know all there is about that animals sicknesses and infirmities, hence the reason for an experimental farm where a close study may be made of what causes horses to have this and that ailment. The breeders intend to finance this undertaking themselves, as they will derive the direct benefits, but nevertheless, their efforts are to be encouraged by everyone else in racing.
