Kandahar carried the colors of H. C. Hatch, Canadian distiller, to their first victory of the meeting when he was an easy winner of the Cold-water Purse, main attraction offered by the Detroit Racing Association at its Fair Grounds course this afternoon. Shootin? High, furnished by Charles T. Fishers Dixi-ana, was second and R. Robertsons Lynx Eye came from last place during the final furlong to beat Sun Power by a nose for third laurels. Lynx Eye, which trailed until the final sixteenth, came back lame. The real disappointment was Zsar, which was; poorly ridden by Herb Fisher and was forced to finish under his own courage after Fisher had taken him back repeatedly during the opening seven furlongs. Navarre finished last in a field of six that met under allowance conditions over the mile and seventy yards distance. Shootin High and the winner dominated the pace throughout, with the Hatch color-bearer taking the lead entering the stretch to reach the finish six lengths before Shootin High. Zsar held third position for the greater part of the trip and probably would have been a stronger factor under more energetic handling. Sun Power and Navarre alternated at fourth position to the final furlong, where Navarre dropped back and Sun Power came to be outgamed by the fast finishing Lynx Eye. LUKE-WARM FAVORITE. The winner, a luke-warm favorite at odds of 12 to 5, ran -the distance in 1:45 and carried the top impost of 116 pounds, which was also shouldered by Lynx Eye. With the return to fair weather another large crowd was present this afternoon. Although the program, due to threatening showers yesterday, was not up to the usual standard, formful and spirited racing prevailed. In the fifth event, which supported the feature, San Lu provided a mild surprise and chalked up his second victory of the meeting and fifth of the year when he won over Kingsbury, the favorite, Ladino and seven others at the end of six furlongs. Blind Star rewarded for the talent and Farrel Jones scored another victory when L. J. Dillers representative was an easy winner of the first race, at three-quarters.
