QUIGLETS LONG CONTRACT Engaged to Direct Racing at New" Del Mar Track in California for Five-Year Term. SAN! DIEGO, Calif., June 22 "Bing! Crosby, president of The Del Mar Turf Club, today announced that William A. Quigley, director of racing, had signed a five-year contract to continue in his current role. The contract includes the next five meetings of The Del Mar Turf Club, where inaugural ceremonies, and an eight-race program, will be presented on Saturday, July 3. Director Quigleys affiliation with The Del Mar Turf Club goes back to an era preceding its coming into being, actually speaking. And it was Quigley who brought Crosby into the "fold", procedure being in this manner: Officials of the 22nd Agricultural District of San Diego County, casting about for a leader for The Del Mar Turf Club, asked Quigley to find a suitable man. Quigley went to Crosby; discussed the matter with him, and he,, with his proverbial modesty replied: LOVES HORSES. "Why, Im only a crooner. I love horses. I love to breed horses and to race horses, but taking the role of president of The Del Mar Turf Club is something apart from all that." "But youre a GOOD crooner, and youre a natural, said Quigley. "Youre one of the worlds most popular and better known artists. You live near the site of The Del Mar Turf Club to be. Why, youd fit into the frame of the picture better than anybody I know," Quigley argued. "O. K, Ill take the job if youll come in with me as director of racing," agreed Crosby. A Corporation was then organized; a Board formed, and Crosby was made president. And thus came Crosby into the presidency of The Del Mar Turf Club. It was a case of mutual admiration and confidence on the part of both men.
