RIFTED CLOUDS WINS Speedy Filly Returns to Scene of Her Juvenile Successes. Runs Six Furlongs in 1:11 to Triumph in Featured Turf and Field Club Handicap. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 22. The Woolford Farms Rifted Clouds, rated the best of the two-year-old fillies last year in John B. Campbells experimental handicap, returned to the scene of her Washington Park juvenile stakes victory a year ago in a display of high speed to capture the Turf and Field Club Handicap, which topped todays program at Washington Park. The homebred daughter of Insco and Greenland, which turned back some of the fleetest youngsters in the country last year but which performed only twice previously in 1937 with indifferent success, showed a return of her best form by running three-quarters of a mile over a fast but slightly dead track in 1:11. Rifted Clouds shouldered but 93 jounds, which included the rapidly improving apprentice Charles Calvin, and at this figure was the recipient of from eleven to twenty-seven actual weight from her five opponents. The Woolford Farm filly took the lead at the break and was never headed, leading the heavily-backed runner-up, Calumet Farms Crossbow II., by two arid a half lengths as - .they flashed under the wire. Crossbow II. .was in closest pursuit of his less-fancied. and younger rival from shortly after the getaway and, despite strong urging at the hands of his rider, Irving Anderson. Cross S., representing the Valdina Farms, was third, another length back, while H. P. Headleys Preeminent was fourth. Higher Cloud and Candescent were the only other starters. Candescent and Higher Cloud raced well up. through the early furlongs, but they were through after reaching the final eighth, where Cross S. and Preeminent moved up into their respective finishing positions. CINCINNATI ORGANIZATION. The race was named in honor of a Cincinnati organization and its head, Ike Hy-ams, presented a trophy to B. A. Jones, who saddled Rifted Clouds for her winning performance. The sport was presented under pleasant weather conditions and before one of the larger week day crowds of the meeting. With many out-of-town visitors at the track, speculation was better than on most week days since the meeting got under way. The fifth race honored the Variety National Association of Broadcasters, and in it B. P. Woodsons Leading Article carried apprentice Paul Ryan to his second victory of the afternoon. After dismounting, Ryan was presented with a radio by L. B. Wilson, owner of Station WCKY of Covington, Ky. Leading Article took an early lead in the supporting feature and was never headed, showing the way at the end of the seven furlongs by a length and a half. Flint Shot was second, More News third and Over Yonder next. The principal disappointment .here was the effort of the well-backed Sun Captor, which, in his first start of the year, failed, to threaten at any stage. TAB ME PROVES BEST. Showing herself to be much the best of her field, Morris Vehons Tab Me, handled by Alfred Robertson, emerged from a rough first race to graduate from the maiden two-year-old ranks. The daughter of Sir Andrew was one of the principal victims of the crowding which occurred soon after the start, for, from a good position, she was forced back into last place. Then she displayed her superiority by racing around the entire field to win in a driving finish by a neck. Mafuta, which led most of the way by a wide margin, gave way badly in the final eighth, but clung to second money, which she took by a neck over the fast-closing Cindy.
