NARRAGANSETT STAKE DATES Twelve Special Features Scheduled for Meeting Opening August 16. Rich Handicap, to Have Either 5,000 or 0,000 Added Down for Decision on September 11. PAWTUCKET, R. L, June 22. A brilliant array of twelve important stakes, featured by the now famous Narragansett Special for three years the highlight of the New England racing season will be run off during Narragansett Parks summer meeting, which opens August 16th and speeds through thirty racing days, to close September 18th. Stake blanks, fresh from the press, have just been mailed to all horsemen. Eight of the summer stakes are scheduled at one mile or over; two are six-furlong dashes for three-year-olds and upward; two "are restricted to fillies and mares, while the remaining two will send the cream of the two-year-old crop over six furlongs for the first time. All nominations close on July 15th, including the supplementaries for the Special, which will be run on Saturday, September 11, over one mile and three-sixteenths, with 5,000 or 0,000 added. Since its inception in 1934, the Special-has always "been won by a first-class race horse. It was Time Supply in 1934, Top Row in 1935, and Rosemont in 1936, each of the latter pair going from victories in the big Narragansett stake to win Americas richest purse, the 00,000 Santa Anita. OPPORTUNITY FOR FILLIES. The lassies of three and upward will have their first chance on August 25 in the Mary Dyer, run over a mile and seventy yards, with ,000 added. G. D. Wideners crack filly, High Fleet, whipped a good field, including Fair Stein, Fair Knightess and Lady Higloss to win last year. On September 4 the New England Oaks, over a mile and a sixteenth, with ,000 added, will attract the best three-year-old fillies. High Fleet also accounted for the Oaks in 1936. The opening day stake, as usual, will be the Blackstone Valley Handicap, a six furlong dash for three-year-olds and upward, with ,500 added. Previous winners here have been High Glee, Whopper and Aneroid. The Shawomet, first stake in the book for juveniles, to be run on August 18, over six furlongs, with ,000 added, promises high importance this year, with such flyers as Araho Lass, Huskie Boy, Historic Era, Don Lopez and others campaigning in the New England sector. The second juvenile classic is the Nayatt Handicap, set for September 15 over six furlongs, with ,000 added, and this again should produce a stirring contest for juvenile supremacy.. Three-year-olds are catered to in the Warren Handicap, spotted for September 1 and run over a mile and a sixteenth, with ,000 the inducement. Then comes the Roger Williams on August 21; the Fall River on August 28; the What Cheer on September 6; and the Rochambeau September 18. All are renewals of events which in previous years have attracted sparkling fields.
