SCHMIDL RIDES SKILFULLY Saddle Work Plays Big Part in Triumph of Happy Hostess Over Largess at Agawam. AGAWAM, Mass., June 28. Turning in her best performance of the present meeting and ridden skilfully by-f jockey Albert Schmidl, -Happy "Hostess,, in- the silks of J. E. Simmons, won the best offering at. Agawam Park today. Her victory came in the fifth race, whichattracted a half dozen three-year-olds of the better grade, and her triumph was one of the many scored by outsiders on a wet afternoon of entertainment. Rain that; fell for a long period beginning at an early hour, transformed the track into a. sea of mud and, although the card was riddled by numerous withdrawals, the sport furnished was interesting. In the race accounted for by Happy Hostess, one of the best finishes of the day occurred and it was Largess, from the A. C. Bostwick Stable, that took second place, while Who, a consistent miss from H. Schumanns stable, took third from Nellie Mc. Belle Elan and Never Never were the only others under silks for the dash of six furlongs, and they finished in that order. In the race, Nellie Mc, making her first local start, was the one to set the pace, while Never Never and Happy Hostess chased along after the speedy Sorrentino miss. In the run down the far side of the track, Nellie Mc led the way by little more than a longth, while Happy Hostess, in third place, was galloping along strongly and giving the leaders little chance to gain a second breath. When the stretch was reached, Never Never found his task too exacting. As he fell back, Happy Hostess moved up readily on the outside to dispute the lead. Finishing fast on the inside in the final eighth, Nellie Mc began to tire, and the Simmons filly raced into a short lead in the final sixteenth, then, under a rousing finish by Schmidl, barely lasted long enough to beat Largess by the shortest possible margin.
