HIALEAH HIALEAH PARK PARK MAY MAY OFFER OFFER SECOND SECOND 0,000 0,000 RACE RACE NOMINATIONS NOMINATIONS F0R0,000 F0R0,000 SANTA SANTA ANITA ANITA DERBY DERBY REAL CHAMPIONSHIP Plans Under Way to Bring Together --Six Outstanding Older Horses. Beabiscuit, War Admiral, Stagehand, Lawrin, Dauber and Pasteurized the Contemplated Contestants. MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 14 Another 0,000 race is in the making for Hialeah Park, a real championship affair, intended to attract the six leading members of the four-year-old and upward division. Naturally, the most prominent of the sextet are Seabiscuit, which recently deprived War Admiral of the title, and Glen Riddles son of Man o War, who is the chief pretender to the crown. Third cn the list is Stagehand, leading money winning thoroughbred on this side of the Atlantic during 1938, and the three three-year-old "Classic winners of the past season Lawrin, hero of the Kentucky Derby; Dauber, triumphant in the Preakness, and Pasteurized, -winner of the Belmont. It is the hope of Joseph E. Widener and his associates that five of the above lot can be obtained, with Dauber doubtful. In deference to the Santa Anita management, an official announcement is being withheld un-iil the weights for the 00,000 California stake are announced, for it is understood that upon those adjustments rests the winder schedule of Seabiscuit. STRICTLY INVITATION AFFAIR. Hialeah Parks newest race would be Strictly an invitation affair, and open only to the half a dozen named above. Present plans call for it to be at a mile and a quarter, either at scale weight or five pounds below scale. The nomination fee will be a stiff one, probably ,500, with no additional cost -to start. However, there is some sentiment for the posting of a ,000 forfeit by each owner, which is returned if his horse starts. That, however, is a minor detail. If Charles S. Howard names Seabiscuit, hes pretty certain to run him, and the writer understands the association will reserve the right to cancel the race unless this fellow, War Admiral and one other go to the post. It is a well-known fact hereabouts that Sam Riddle is very anxious to have another crack at Seabiscuit, while Maxwell Howard, owner of Stagehand, and Herbert Woolf, who has Lawrin, upon being sounded out, expressed eagerness to participate in such a contest. " Lawrin already is quartered at Hialeah Park, with Stagehand, Pasteurized and War Admiral all due there before the season is far advanced. A better line on Seabiscuits .plans will be obtained after Charles Howard looks over the weights for the Santa Anita, which are due tomorrow. Dauber, purchased by E. E. Fogelson early last summer for a fancy figure, now is in California, and, while an invitation will be extended him, it is considered improbable he will come on. TOP THE OLDER DIVISION. Seabiscuit and War Admiral are so well known to the turf world that little comment on the two is needed. Both were standout performers in the four-year-old and up-.ward division during 1938, and have been at Continued on twenty-third page. HIALEAH PARK MAY OFFER SECOND 0,000 RACE Continued from first page. the top of the heap for the last two years, j The pair are bound to be favored over their ! younger rivals. Lawrin came into prominence at Hialeah Park last winter, when he ran off with honors in the Flamingo Stakes, and then moved into Kentucky to account for the Blue Grass classic. He was third on the list of money-winning horses for 1938, being topped only by Stagehand and Seabiscuit. He went amiss at Hollywood Park, in California, during the summer, but at present is training soundly. Stagehand, conqueror of Seabiscuit in the Santa Anita Handicap last winter, is one of the best finishers the turf has seen in recent seasons. In addition to that stake, he won the Santa Anita Derby, Narragansett Special, Empire City Handicap and Governors Handicap at Narragansett Park. Never has he measured strides with War Admiral or Lawrin, but his record says that at a mile and a quarter he has a royal chance to whip both, just as he did Seabiscuit. WINNER OF BELMONT STAKES. Pasteurized finished third to Lawrin in the Flamingo last winter and came into his greatest prominence during the spring meeting at Belmont Park when he whipped Dauber in the Belmont. Hes been away from the races since, but reports say hes going soundly again. This one appears the weakest of the "invitation" prospects. If the proposed invitation race becomes an actuality, it probably will be run two Saturdays before the Widener, February 18, the date now set for the McLennan Memorial. That race could be transferred to the following Wednesday Washingtons birthday or Thursday. This would enable horses below "the Big Six" to have a final public conditioner for the Widener in it. Miami and Miami Beach would benefit greatly if this new championship event is held, as people would be bound to come from all parts of the country to view the race, the Flamingo and the Widener Challenge Cup, all staged within a period of thirteen racing days. That would hold em in this area for a trifle more than two weeks. The annual Florida turf season, which lies directly ahead, promises to be a big one, but it will be the greatest of all time if Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Stagehand and Lawrin hook up in the invitation race and then come back to do it all over again in the Widener.
