t SANTA ANITA TURF NOTES t s On the strength of all but a scattering few of the 107 nominees for the 00,000 added Santa Anita Handicap already in California, or having had shipping plans announced, the Los Angeles Turf Club is proceeding with plans to announce the weights on December 15 in expectation of a large starting field on March 4, next. Col. Maxwell Howard, in a recent letter to general manager Charles H. Strub, stated: "Stagehand, Sceneshifter, and The Chief have been shipped to Columbia, where they will be trained and prepared for their early spring engagements. Very difficult impossible to make any definite program regarding horses; ill luck and accidents play too important a role, but I sincerely hope my racing affairs shape up so my horses renew their friendships that they made last winter in California, Santa Anita roles." It is interesting to note in the 107 nominations for the fifth running of the 00,000 added Santa Anita Handicap, twelve of these horses have gone postward in previous runnings of the worlds richest classic. In this list of twelve are a previous winner Stagehand, a horse which has run second the last two years, beaten two noses Seabiscuit, a horse which has run third Indian Broom, and one which has run fourth Gosum. There is one previous winner of the 0,000 Santa Anita Derby Stagehand; and six other former contestants of this classic which have gone on to become top-flight horses of the older handicap division.
