VALENTINE "VET" HORSEMAN Shepard and Penney Trainer Began Career in 1895 as a Jockey -Celebrates 71st Birthday. COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 7. Charlie Valentine, Columbus "grand old man of the turf," observed his seventy-first birthday Tuesday, April 4. He spent the "day just as he does most any other by looking after the stable of horses he trains at Beulah Park. In addition to horses owned by himself and Mrs. Valentine, Charlie also trains for Harry D. Shepard and Herb Penney. The "grand old man" started his turf career as a jockey in 1895. Tvo years later, he turned to the trotters and pacers as a driver and trainer of a public stable. Valentine stayed with the harness race sport until four years ago, when he returned to the thoroughbreds. Charlie was very much in the public eye during the old Columbus Driving Park days and he recalled today that his greatest thrill probably was furnished by Independence Boy, which he piloted to four victories during a two-weeks meeting at the gone but not forgotten Livingston Ave. enclosure. Independence Boy was owned by Shepard and Charlie Hayes. Valentines last big thrill in harness racing came not so many years ago when he guided O. C. Belts High Noon to a worlds record for trotting stallions over a half-mile track at the Ohio State Fair. Since returning to the thoroughbreds, Valentines success has been short of sensational. However, he is "high" on three of Shepards juveniles he will introduce to racing this spring. They are O. K., Mullen, Su preme King and Giggle Lee.
