THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 1 CHALLEDON By NORRIS ROYDEN i. Challedon holds the distinction of having won a trio of Futuritys the Maryland, New England and Pimlico and with the latter two over the longer - two-year-old distances, he shapes up particularly well as a prospect for the important three-year-old races. The Maryland-bred son of Challenger H. and Laura Gal, by Sir Gallahad m., also appears to be an all-track horse, so his chances should be the same whether the going is fast or muddy. William L. Branns colt was given careful and excellent handling in his development by former jockey Louis Schaefer, starting only six times and winning four times. Nevertheless he earned 7,700, a sum exceeded only by that won by El Chico among the juveniles. His career was inaugurated in July at Delaware Park, and he was third to Birch Rod and Buds Bell in an overnight affair, easily graduating in his next outing two months later at Narragansett Park. On the basis of that effort, he was shipped to Havre de Grace for the Eastern Shore Handicap, but as is frequently the case when that stake attracts a large field, many of the starters do not have a reasonable chance of showing their best and Challedon was one of those unable to run to expectations. Four weeks elapsed before Challedon ran again, this time in the Maryland Futurity at Laurel. He was well out of contention in the early portion of, this six furlongs sprint, but he closed very fast to gain the verdict by a nose over War Moon and really was much the best of the field. In the New England Futurity two weeks later, the Brann colorbearer encountered a heavy track, but the going made no difference to him, and he went to the front when ready, to finish the mile and seventjr yards two lengths before Impound, as Gilded Knight was third and T. M. Dorsett placed fourth. v Challedon was yet to display his smartest effort, however, and that was forthcoming in the Pimlico Futurity, in which he ran the mile and one-sixteenth in 1:45 to defeat Third Degree by a length and one-half as Gilded Knight was third, Big Hurry fourth and Impound among the trailers. His impost of 119 pounds included an allowance of three pounds from just a few of his seven opponents. Despite his rather moderate campaign, Challedon is a sound and rugged colt, well equipped physically to handle his weight in the important races like the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, for which he now is being prepared. He appears to be the best horse to have come out of Maryland since Chase Me, and that section believes it has a first class candidate for three-year-olds, a theory supported by observers elsewhere. The breeding savants cannot help but recommend Challedon as a distance running prospect. His sire, Challenger H., is a son of Swynford, whose descendants have been winning important long races on both sides of the Atlantic for quite a few years now. But the Brann colt is just as stoutly bred on the distaff side. His dam was Laural Gal by Sir Gallahad JJX, from Laura Dianti, she a daughter of Wrack, which won the Stonybrook Stakes, Bronxville Highweight Handicap, New Rochelle, Knickerbocker and Labor Day Handicaps, and second in the Empire City Derby. Lady Errant, by Knight Errant and the third dam, captured the Latonia Cup at two and one-quarter miles, and her dam, Outcome, accounted for the Latonia Oaks. Isinglass : .Tlsonomy Deadlock u .
