" " " i , -- - f Kentucky Derbys of Past Charts and Future Books I 1933 t t,..-.. .......... ........ --.-...-.....4 W. R. Coes Ladysman, the horse with the "trick" knees, was the future book and starting favorite for the Kentucky Derby of 1933. He finished fourth in that memorable race that saw jockeys Meade and Fisher stage a wrestling match in a furious final eighth drive. Meade won the "fall" and the Derby with Brokers Tip, to give Edward R. Bradley his fourth Derby triumph. Head Play, Fishers mount, was second, but was undoubtedly the best horse in the race. Brokers Tip opened at 40 to 1 on Februaiy 18, moved up to 50 to 1 on March 4 and remained at that price until a few days before the running of the race when heavy backing drove him down to 15 to 1. He paid .93 to in the mutuels. Head Play and Kerry Patch were best liked after Ladysman in the early betting. Following is the chart and figures in connection with the future book wagering on the 1933 Kentucky Derby: SIXTH RACE 1 1-4 MILES. Twenty Grand, May 16, 19312:013126. J. Thompson; bred by Idle Hour Stock Farm. WENT TO POST 5:10. AT POST 8 minutes. Start good out of machine. Won driving; second and third the same. BROKERS TIP, much the best, began very slowly, saved some ground when movinejup leaving the back stretch, but lost some on the stretch turn, then went to the inside and, responding to urging and overcoming interference, was up to win in the final strides after a long and rough drive. HEAD PLAY, rated close to the pace, went to the front easily, came out when increasing his lead on the stretch turn and bumped the winner when holding on stubbornly. CHARLEY O., well in hand for three-quarters, challenged gamely, then tired, but held LADYSMAN safe. The latter raced wide most of the way, was under restraint for seven-eighths and failed to rally when hard urged. POMPONIUS closed resolutely. SPICSON began slowly. KERRY PATCH tired. MR. KHAYYAM was never a factor. ISAIAH and DARK WINTER showed early speed. GOOD ADVICE quit badlv and was pulled up.
