. EXPECT SENATE APPROVAL WASHINGTON, D. C, April 7. Administration leaders were confident today that they can hold members of the Senate to their agreement to support the House approved 00,000,000 appropriation to finance the WPA until the end of the fiscal year, June 30, as a vote on the measure neared. Senator Pepper, of Florida, leading the fight for the 50,000,000 requested by President Roosevelt, said he was "gaining votes," but declined to predict the outcome. Members of the economy bloc hoped to bring a vote on the issue today. Majority Leader Barkley said that if a vote is not taken by nightfall, he will try to keep the Senate in session Saturday. Pepper denied he was attempting to delay a vote on the issue, but at the same time said that "the country is just beginning to realize what is happening." He opened an attack on the Senates -agreement" with a four-hour speech. Senator Mead, of New York, immediately took up where Pepper left off in support of the Presidents request and spoke for almost an hour.
