POLLY HASTINGS PROVES BEST R. A. Coward Colorbearer Favors Soft Footing of Bowie Track. Kenty and Teddy Patic Dead Heat for Second Place Johnny Oros Rides First Winner in Two Days Astride Coward Mare. colorbearer of R. A. Coward in the Godling-ton Manor Purse, the mile and seventy yards event which featured this afternoons program, proved more successful than two earlier favorites from that establishment as she easily took the measure of five rivals. Running over a track which still was slow from the rains of the previous day, the six-year-old daughter of Peter Hastings and Irish Polly, made a show of her company, completing the distance in 1:47, with speed to spare. It was the first winner in two days for Johnny Oros, Americas leading rider for 1939. The Texas-owned mare ran right back to her previous sprint race over the track, but a heavy play on Knoxville and Kenty enabled her backer to obtain .75 to . At that price the Coward representative was second choice. She was four lengths in front of Kenty and Teddy Patic at the finish as that pair were dead heating for the place. OROS GOOD REDE. Oros had Polly Hastings away fast and sent her to the top at the first turn when the leaders swung wide. Riding under rating orders he took her in hand at once in the back stretch and eased the mare back to fourth place. Leaving the back stretch, Oros sent her up on the outside and she circled the leaders turning for home to draw off as her rider willed. Kenty, showing much more speed than in his previous outing, was a forward factor the entire journey, battling gamely through for stretch to pass the judges stand nose and nose with Teddy Patic. The latter, a winner at six furlongs last out, was pinched off on the first turn but went up fast from the six furlongs post to be with the leaders thereafter. Like Kenty, he was no match for the winner when she made her run. SKILFUL REDE. H. Dupuy, recently arrived from Hot Springs, handled Dizzy Dame in skilful fashion, enabling the H. Kerr colorbearer to gain a head decision over Light Chatter in the six-furlong dash, which was the secondary attraction. The latter whipped her in decisive style on the opening day of the meeting. Two lengths back of the runner-up, Slattern was a steadily closing third. The winners time of 1:14 was exactly the same as that hung out by Golden Vein in an "earlier claimer for Maryland-breds. i Dizzy Dame had the speed to take a short lead and race Littile Drift into subjection by the time the home stretch had been reached. Then she appeared to falter slightly but came on again to outgame Light Chatter in the last hundred yards. The runner-up, running right back to her 1939 inaugural, was a forward factor throughout, hanging on with considerable tenacity when driven in tne siretcn. PRAETOR DISAPPOINTS. The widely heralded Praetor made his public bow in the initial half-mile dash for juvenile maidens, but he could finish no better than fourth to . the triumphant Nicky after setting the early pace. The Pompey colt was a well-supported choice and performed in better fashion than the charts would indicate. The winner, educated in a recent race over the track, closed with a rush to be just clear of Onisac at the final post. Port Wales was a length farther away as he outlasted Praetor for third money. Nicky left the post slowly and was outpaced to the head of the stretch, finishing fast once straightened out, to run past the early leaders. Onisac, also shy on early speed, finished stoutly in the last eighth. Joaney B., unable to win a race in Miami during the winter, led a poor band of platers over the six furlongs of the second, fashioned for non-winners since November 24. At the end the Cherokee mare was half a length in front of Jack Sting, that gelding taking second place from Sport Heel by a length and one-half. The latter was the second public choice to fail, with the winner being a .25-to- chance.
