KENTUCKY DERBY MEETING OPENS AT DOWNS TODAY ► o Clark Handicap Chief Feature With Technician Entered in Purse « Sixty-Fifth Annual Spring Session at Famous Louisville Track — Weather Cloudy and Track Fast — Eight Races on Inaugural Days Program LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 28.— Churchill Downs, world famous as the scene of the Kentucky Derby, to be run this year on May 6, opens its sixty-fifth annual Spring meeting here tomorrow and if the weatherman is in a kindly mood, the nineteen-day meeting may get off to one of the biggest starts it has known, in some time. Col. Matt J. Winn, head of the Downs and guiding spirit behind the Derby, which this year may be witnessed by more than 75,000 persons, today made a final inspection of the spacious plant and its improvements and pronounced everything in readiness for tomorrows inaugural and for the presentation of the 0,000 added Derby a week later. In anticipation of one of its most successful meetings in years, Churchill Downs has scheduled seven stakes in addition to the Derby, for the nineteen days of racing and the manner in which they have been supported by patrons of the turf assures sport of the highest caliber. There are more horses quartered in Louisville than at any time in the history of racing in the Falls City and represented by these thoroughbreds are some of the most fashionable stables in the country. RESERVATIONS EXHAUSTED. The tremendous attraction the Kentucky Derby holds for turf fans all over the continent is seen in the fact that every available reservation for Derby Day has been sold long since and that the meeting itself is arousing widespread interest sectionally is reflected by the unprecedented demand for seasonal accomodations. The first week of the Downs meeting, from Saturday to Saturday, will see the presentation of one of the most ambitious programs the local track has ever attempted. Climaxed by the sixty-fifth running of the Derby, ranked No. 1 race in the American turf parade, six stakes are to be offered in that span of seven racing days. STAKE FEATURES. The Clark Handicap, also supported by sixty-four years of background, headlines tomorrows inaugural program, and then follow runnings of the Derby Trial Stake3 next Tuesday, the Debutante Stakes on Wednesday, the Churchill Downs Handicap on Thursday and the Bashford Manor Stakes on Friday. The two remaining stakes on the Downs calendar are the. Kentucky Oaks, another sixty-four-year-old race, and the Kentucky Handicap, the former to be staged on Saturday, May 13, and the Kentucky Handicap on Saturday, May 20, the final day of the meeting. Although the Clark Handicap is accorded the feature billing tomorrow, as much interest will be directed toward the Daniel Boone Purse, in which Technician, owned by Herbert M. Woolf and the Wests principal threat in the Derby, is scheduled to make his first public appearance since he won Hialeah Parks Flamingo Stakes. The six Continued on thirty-fifth page. Jones expects him to make a good showing, although he doesnt think a defeat would be to his discredit. Technician has turned in many splendid private trials over longer distances and Jones believes tomorrows dash will help him immeasurably as a tightener for the Derby grind. The Woolf colt may be sent post-ward one more time before next Saturday — in the mile Derby Trial Stakes on Tuesday. Four other Derby eligibles and the speedy Bugles Blow, winner of his only two starts in California last winter, are to oppose Technician. The other Derby nominees are No Competition and Giles County, from the Milky Way Farm stable of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars; John Marschs Lightspur and Dan Lehans Fern Creek. Bugles Blow is owned by Mrs. Bessie Franzheim, whose Derby hope is Xalapa Clown, an intended starter in Tuesdays Trial. TEN IN CLARK. The Clark Handicap drew a field of ten, including Charles T. Fishers Torchy, winner of the Phoenix Handicap at Keeneland. He is to shoulder top weight of 116 pounds, a figure he shares with Louise J. Hickmans Arabs Arrow, one of the handicap stars of last years spring meeting here. Others scheduled to take part in tomorrows ,500 added feature are the Tall Trees Stables Last Message, Bert Friends Co-Sport, Mrs. Kirby Ramseys Palamede, M. J. Schmitts Sortie Star, G. M. Hendries Poona and Ridge, Friedberg and Axtons Manie OHara, and Mrs. R. J. Murphys Knee Deep. Six other attractive races are on tomorrows program and post time for the first race is 2:00 oclock. The racing will be conducted under the same able supervision of men who have guided the sport here for many years. Charles F. Price, beginning, his fifty-second year at Churchill Downs, is presiding steward In charge of racing, and serving as asso- ciate stewards are C. Bruce Head and William H. Shelley, the latter also handling the duties of racing secretary and handicapper. The placing judges are Harry B. Linden-berger, James T. Clark and Larry C. Bogen-schutz, while William Hamilton is back as starter. Shelley, who has served in the stewards stand on several occasions in the j past, was appointed regularly to that position this year, while Clark will be serving his first full season as judge this spring. Both, however, have long been identified with the Downs. The Clark Handicap, a run of a mile and one-sixteenth for three-year-olds and upward, and the Daniel Boone Purse, a six furlongs sprint for three-year-olds, feature tomorrows opening-day program at Churchill Downs.
