FOURTH SESSION AT WHEEING West Virginia Course Opening Its i Gates on May 27. Officials Predicting Best Meeting in Short History of Track— Plenty of Horses Are Assured. WHEELING, W. Va., April 28.— Wheeling Downs next month opens its fourth meeting in three years and will reach a "new all-time high for quality of racing in the citys history," it was predicted today by J. Gilbert Haus, veteran Maryland racing official, "who was a visitor here during the past few days. Haus, to serve as placing judge and clerk of scales during the spring session opening May 27, said that plans for the sixteen-day program are rapidly taking shape. He pointed out that the general improvements which have been completed at the Island plant during the past two weeks have made Wheeling Downs one of the finest half-mile tracks in the country. Haus will also assist Edward J. Brennan, managing director at the Downs. APPLICATIONS HEAVY. "Mr. Brennan has been swamped with applications for stall space, thus assuring the fans the very best of racing seen on small tracks anywhere," Haus declared. "With the few improvements that have been completed and the entire plant given a new coat of paint, Wheeling Downs will rightfully earn the title again this year of being the Saratoga of half-mile tracks." Haus came here to superintend the early improvements, including the erection of a new row of stalls immediately in back of the grandstand. He predicted that the local plants 400 stalls will be filled with many excellent horses by the time the opening day rolls around. With the large early list of applications and the attractive condition book about to be released by racing secretary William Shewbridge, Haus said Wheelings qualifications for a highly successful spring meeting are very promising.
