i BOWEN AND COWARD DOUBLE Phalasan Withstands Hard Stretch Drive in Narragansett Victory. Cruising Head Behind After Stretch Duel — Apprentice J. Bowen Pilots Three Winners During Day. PAWTUCKET,. R. I., April 28.— Jimmy Bowen and the R. A. Coward stable completed a double as Phalasan, under a hard stretch drive, won the Friars Club Purse, which featured a frigid day of racing at Narragansett Park. At the end of the journey Bowen had the Phalaros mare a head clear of A. J. Halliwells Cruising. Paul Kelleys Chancer, which set most of the pace, finished third, half a length off the runner-up, and Notice Me was fourth. The only other starter was Pumpgun. Chancer went out to set the pace at once, with Cruising in nearest pursuit and Phalasan well placed back of the leaders. On the far turn Phalasan and Notice Me moved together on the leaders. Notice Me saved ground as they came into the stretch, while Phalasan took the outside in making her bid. She was abreast of the leaders at the eighth post and outgamed her rivals in a three-cornered drive that lasted for an eighth of a mile. Cruising was out in all the pace and held on gamely in the final yards. NOTICE ME TIRES. Notice Me looked all over a winner as he charged up on the inside on the turn, but hung slightly in the final drive. Chancer dropped back in the stretch after being prominent throughout the race. Pumpgun never was a serious factor in the running. A light crowd saw the sport, which was decided under wintry skies and conditions that made overcoats compulsory equipment. The track was good, the winner finishing out the distance of the headlined event in 1:13%. Apprentice J. Bowen rounded out a triple for the afternoon when he guided Ida Tarp to victory in the sixth race. Golden Silence, after setting the pace, finished in second place, while the show award went to Light Cruiser. The favorite, Golden Fate, after gaining a forward position early, wilted when placed under pressure, finishing in the ruck.
