CARRIE LOWERS RECORD Shaves Fifth of Second Off Four and One-Half Furlongs Mark. pjxiana Miss Driving Winner of Main Event at Motor City Before Big Crowd — Knowing Romps. DETROIT, Mich., May 25.— Clipping one-fifth of a second from Ste. Louises track record in running the four and one-half furlongs in :54, Carrie, making her initial start under Charles T. Fishers Dixiana silks, was a driving winner of the third race, best event offered for another big crowd at Detroit this afternoon. Toast, furnished by Dan Midkiff, Kentucky breeder and owner, was the runner-up, a length back of the Dixiana miss and half a length before Leo J. Marks Mellowmoon, which tired after offering a determined bid in the final furlong. Martha O. was fourth, and Sidebyside and Imperial Carol trailed the field throughout. Another day of wonderful weather pre-yailed for the sport, contested over a fast track, and Carries success was the second straight for the choices. She was a 7-to-10 choice and her victory was the fourth of the meeting for Dixiana. . FALLON HUSTLES MOUNT. Carrie, a daughter of High Time— Cara-cena, was slow in reaching her stride and Marty Fallon was forced to hustle her along to assume the lead on the far turn. She was unable to draw clear of Toast, however, and when Mellowmoon drove through on the inside on the stretch turn Fallon was forced to put the Dixiana filly to extreme pressure.* Toast, losing ground at the stretch turn, came again when straightened out and.after wearing down Mellowmoon, was gaining on the winner at the end. Martha O. was a badly-beaten fourth, while Sidebyside and Imperial Carol, the other maiden contestants, were distant trailers throughout. Bomar Stables Little Shaver scored in hollow fashion to account for the Royal Oak Purse, sixth and best event. Faust was second, two and one-half lengths back and three and one-half lengths before Presidential, the third horse. Seed and Basque followed the leaders in the named order. Sudanese, making his first start since last summer, lasted to garner a nose victory in the three-quarters first race. Gunwale, the favorite, was the loser in the picture finish, with Fly Me carrying off third honors. Ridden by F. Maschek and under J. H. Logans silks, the winner established a good lead during the opening quarter. After increasing his advantage, Sudanese tired, and Gunwale came on to engage the winner when inside the final furlong. However, Gunwale was weakly handled and Sudanese lasted to the end. DEAD HEAT FOR THIRD. The second dead heat of the meeting— it was the first for show honors — occurred in the six furlongs second race, as Higher Up and Pansys First charged on even terms at the finish. The event was won by Knowing, the favorite, which finished six lengths before Cold Deck. It was not much of a contest, as Knowing led all the way with apparent ease. Carrying the silks of Lucky Teter, the chestnut gelding was booted to his first triumph of the year by Willie Page, after having made twelve starts. Cold Deck held the place safe by five lengths. Lily B. Deming, only woman trainer here, saddled her first winner of the meeting in Continued on thirty-sixth page. CARRIE LOWERS RECORD Continued from first page. Manamaid, a filly, which merely cantered off with the fourth race. Six lengths behind the Deming colorbearer at the end of the six furlongs race, was Termotime, a fielder. Spirit Queen was third. Manamaid, maiden daughter of The Satrap and Float, moved to the front soon after the start, to lead the remaining way with apparent ease. Termotime lasted to beat Spirit Queen, and none of the other starters ever threatened. Aftermath provided another popular score when he carried Mrs. Henry Torrientes silks to a head victory over Prum in the fifth race. Leo D. was third, a length and a half farther back. Not Asleep led the small field of eight to the stretch, where Prum drove through on the inside to take command, but the winner, driving between the leaders, got up in the final stride. i
