LARGE "DAILY DOUBLE" Combination of Laurel Wreath and Pennycress Pays 22.60. Apprentice Otto Grohs Rides Thirtieth Winner of Meeting Astride Laurel Wreath in Opening Eace. COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 25.— After the sterling finish Otto Grohs put up on Laurel Wreath to win the opening race at Fair-mount Park this afternoon and the hotly contested finish of the second event in which Grohs mount, Bedight, was nosed out by Pennycress, the large week-day crowd present was ready for anything in the way of surprises. The winner, with the services of Willie Cassity, another apprentice who has shown promise of riding ability, left the barrier in fourth place, but before the opening run had been negotiated, Tarping was well in advance of the field and maintained his lead to the finish with ease. LUCKY COMBINATION. The "Daily Double" pay-off, which was another corresponding surprise in the afternoons sport, paid 22.60 to those who had Pennycress, winner of the second race, coupled with Tarping in the third event In the fourth race, which was a distance affair of a mile and seventy yards, Green Country proved another easy winner, crossing the finish three lengths in advance of Uncle July. The latter was two and a half lengths before Dodloo. Otto Grohs piloted his thirtieth winner of the meeting when he brought his contract employers Laurel Wreath back the winner of the opening race on the program.
