LAUREL WREATH, well handled and prominent from the start, was steered to the inside for the stretch drive and, under strong urging, outgamed STAR BESS. The latter, racing forwardly from the start and on the outside for the final drive, finished strongly. BESS COVENTRY had good speed from the start, continued gamely under increased pressure in the final stages, but was not good enough. VALDINA saved ground throughout and finished gamely. BEDIGHT, on the inside, moved to the leaders with a rush, took command approaching the final eighth -and continued gamely, but could not withstand the winner. RIPPLEALONG, racing on the outside of THE PELICAN in setting the pace, was forced slightly wide turning into the stretch and tired in the final seventy yards. IDLE WORKER raced on the outside for the entire trip. CALANTA finished gamely. _ THE PELICAN, strongly urged from the start, bore out turning into the stretch and tired when straightened out.
