WITHERS FIELD FORMS EI Chico Will Not Oppose Johnstown Saturday Afternoon. Derby Winner Works Five-Eighths in :58% at Belmont Park — Probable Juvenile Field. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 25.— Nine starters each are promised for the Withers and Juvenile Stakes, the twin features of Saturdays program at Belmont Park, the latest survey of the eligibles reveals. The latest outstanding development in regard to the Withers was the announcement by Matt Brady, Thursday, that El Chico would not start in the Withers, although he had turned in a bristling five furlongs trial in 1:01 during the morning. The Wm. Ziegler, Jr. trainer, reached the conclusion that last years juvenile champion wasnt quite really for such a sharp contest as the Withers promises to be. James Fitzsimmons, trainer of both William Woodwards Johnstown and Mrs. H. C. Phipps Gilded Knight, had them vanned from Aqueduct this morning for final Withers trials over the Belmont course and both colts displayed excellent speed. The Kentucky Derby winner sped five furlongs in :58% after doing the three-eighths in :34, and the half-mile in :46%. Gilded Knight went the same distance in 1:00% and was eased up three-quarters in 1:14%. He was timed the half-mile in :47%. EL CHICO READY. The Greentree Stables Hash was another Withers candidate asked for speed, but he was held to a half-mile in :48%. Brady realized after El Chicos trial that the colt hadnt done enough to be completely ready for the Withers following the period of inactivity since the Kentucky Derby caused by a stone bruise. Of the juvenile eligibles the Greentree Stables Wake Robin, a possible absentee, Continued on thirty-fifth page. Gaver yet hasnt decided on whether to start the youngster in the five furlongs test over the straight course. Bert Mulholland, trainer for George D. Widener, said he would put Birch Rod in the overnight entries for the Withers, but the decision to start him would not be made until after a conference with the Philadelphia sportsman. CRAVATS FINE GALLOP. In other trials Thursday morning, Town-send B. Martins Cravat, a Suburban Handicap candidate, went the mile and one-quarter distance of that engagement on Tuesday in 2:07. The Sickle four-year-old was timed the half-mile in :4875, three-quar- ters in V.13-/s, mile in 1:39 and nine furlongs in 1:53. Mrs. Parker Comings Thanksgiving, also pointing for the Suburban, did the mile and an eighth in 1:56, the half in :50, three-quarters in 1:16 and mile in 1:43. Walter M. Jeffords Jolly Tar turned in a half-mile in :49, three-quarters in 1:15 and mile in 1:42. Time Sheet loomed up as a possible representative of Wm. Ziegler, Jr. in the Belmont, by doing a mile and a furlong in 1:54%. A recent winner, the son of Espino and Deena. Shee, stepped the half-mile in :49, three-quarters in 1:14 and mile in 1:40. In all the . workouts by stakes candidates, they had something left. The probable fields follow: WITHERS STAKES. Horse. Wt. Jockey. Johnstown 118 J. Stout Gilded Knight 118 L. Haas Hash 118 E.
