DETROIT, Mich., May 26.— In one of the most spirited duels to have prevailed during the brief period of the Detroit meeting, Tua-cross, from the Detroit stable of Ted Buhl, emrged the winner of the third race. The son of Whiskalong and Predominant and James C. Ellis Melody Tone started the tussle entering the final half mile of the six furlongs sprint, and, racing in head and head fashion after making the upper turn, they came to the finish a nose apart. Tuacross, racing on the inside, gave way momentarily approaching .the final furlong, but Jackie Bryson soon had him again in command and he held on thereafter. Third honors went to Dan B. Midkiff s Wedding Morn, and the daughter of Eternal turned in a handy effort to be beaten by only a half length. Some six lengths farther back was Mascot and five other maiden three-year-olds chased the quartette to the finish. Partly overcast skies prevailed for the Ladies Day program, and the crowd was a very large one. The track was at its best. The leading trio dominated the pace after a quarter, Imperial Anhut giving way to Wedding Morn at that stage, and, while Tuacross and Melody Tone raced well before Wedding Morn until well inside the final furlong, she came fast to be wearing them down. Tuacross was the favorite and the first to be successful during the afternoon. His time of 1:13 was very good. Closing with a determined rush, Speedy Squaw, a 9-to-10 choice, got up to gain a nose decision in the fourth race for plater two-year-olds and over four and a half furlongs. Miss B. B. was the loser in the pboto finish, and Lucky Hattie was a head farther back. Don Romiro, venerable Pagan Pan gelding, became the first two-time winner of the meeting when he got up to head Takus in the three-quarters first race. Siva, closing in determined fashion was third, a neck far-1 ther back, and one and one-half lengths Continued on fortieth page. There was strong support for the field combination, partially due to Zebars fast trials, but the latter was weakly handled and played no part in the running. Captain Henry, another veteran gelding, was an easy winner of the second race, also at six furlongs. My Blaze, despite racing extremely wide from the stretch turn to the finish, was second, and third went to Rail Down. Miss Tad, slight favorite over the winner, raced wide and far back throughout. Another thrilling finish and popular score came with the fifth race, when Listowel got up at the end of one and one-sixteenth miles. After leading from the start, Maefleet weakened and Listowel garnered a head verdict. Chatter Wrack, racing on the inside, was third, a length and one-half back. Arnolds Actor followed in closest pursuit of Maefleet and tired after offering a bold bid entering the final furlong, final furlong.
