SHANGAY LILYS MAIDEN WIN Chilean-Bred Mare Takes Honors in Firenze Handicap at Belmont. Daughter of Sin Sabor Held at 20 to 1 in Wagering— Edile Wins Steeplechase Contest From Baffler. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 26.— Shangay Lily, one of the importations from Chile, was a surprise winner of the best offering of the Westchester Racing Association at Belmont Park today. This was a mile handicap fashioned for fillies and mares. The seven-year-old daughter of Sin Sabor had only been able to score one third in this country in eleven starts. She was neglected at 20 to 1 in the market. It was i doubly a victory for South America when | Ruperto Donoso had the mount on the W. I V. McGrath campaigner. M. Van Beurens Pixey Dell, the favorite, raced to the place with Louie Strubes Rust taking third from One Jest. With delightful racing weather an interesting card of overnight events brought out a goodly crowd. The racing was exciting with close finishes the order, and in one event there came a dead heat for the place when a photograph could not separate Old Refrain and Scarlet Raider. START EXCELLENT. In the Firenze Handicap, that, went to Shangay Lily, the start was an excellent one and Pixey Dell was just showing her nose in front as she left her stall. The Wind was right with her and then came Shangay Lily and Rust. Rust was not long in close ! contention for Longden eased her back from j close quarters until she dropped to last 1 I , place. j I Then Mary Schulz was moved into command by Wall and The Wind held to j i second place, with Torchilght coming into contention as she led Pixey Dell, but they were all so closely lapped that there was little to choose among them. The Wind was carrying Mary Schulz along and shortly the pair had opened up a lead of two lengths on One Jest, which had moved up on the outside as the field rounded from the back-stretch. Rust was still well back and Shangay Lily had also dropped back rather badly. As the field came into the stretch Mary Schulz showed signs of weakening, and when the others closed, Pixey Dell showed her head in front. The Wind was all through, but Rust was making up ground rapidly and Shangay Lily was moving into contention. DOING HER BEST. Pixey Dell was doing her best and just showing the way, seventy yards from the end and then Shangay Lily came along outside of her to win by half a length. Rust was two lengths back of Pixey Dell in third place and she had just saved third from One Jest by a head. There was some delay before the first race, when a new book was required by the scratching of Miss Gallant after the betting had begun. This set back the post time ten minutes. The reason for this scratching was some discrepancy between the registered marking and the photograph of the filly. With this one out the field was reduced to five starters and only three interests i when two stables raced. The winner turned up in A. J. Sacketts Tola Rose, a son of Head Play— June Rose. There was a lively fight for second place, and On Stage, racing for Hal Price Headley, just won over Tactician, and Set was fourth.
