Bookmakers Would Be Licensed at ,000 and Turn Over 5 Per Cent of Handle to State, LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 22 —Legalized bookmaking in California lacks only the signature of Gov. Culbert L. Olson to a bill passed by the legislature yesterday to be- j come an accomplished fact. The measure, introduced by assemblyman J Clinton Fulcher, was approved by the soions | by a vote of 22 to 16. It was then returned to the assembly, which concurred in changes made by the senate. There has been no official pronouncement as to Governor Olsons attitude towards the bookmaking bill, but from unofficial sources today the word was current that he will probably sign the measure, making it a law. PROVISIONS OF BILL. The bill provides that: The state board of equalization shall be entrusted with the administration of the act and enforcement of regulations concerning bookmaking. Each bookmaker must pay a license fee of ,000 a year and post a security bond of 0,000. The bookie must collect and turn over to the state five per cent of the total gross wagers handled by him. Only one bookmaking license for each i 10,000 of population can be issued but there must be two in each county to prevent j monopoly. Each city is entitled to one bookmaker regardless of population. * I The board is authorized to refuse licenses s- I for books in the immediate vicinity of rt I I churches, schools, hospitals, play grounds s and other locations where they might be con- ■ trary to the public interest. r *.
