CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 22.— A stocky chestnut filly demonstrated that she was a mud-loving miss here this afternoon at North Randall when Miss Ethel, James A. Blackwells colorbearer, sped to victory in the first race, a dash for two-year-olds. It was an all-around Texas victory. Bred and owned in the Lone Star state by Mr. Bler.kwell, she was guided to her triumph by Don Scurlock, a Dallas lad. Miss Ethel led every step of the way to win by the narrow margin of a head. A good week-day crowd was out for the afternoons sport. Although the off-track had caused so many scratches that the fields were small, splendid weather pre-. vailed, while a mild sun beamed from above for the early races. i The finish of the opening race provided a i | thrill as Miss Ethel held the onrushing | Nadine Omar, owned by Harry Penny and i the second choice, by only a head. Third, a [ length farther back, was P. J. Valentis Victory March. The alert Miss Ethel broke first and t sprinted off to establish a good lead in the early stages of the four and one-half fur-r longs dash. Her opposing seven youngsters , were belated in reaching their best strides 5 1 J in the mucky going and it was not until near r ] j the end that she was challenged. Nadine Omar, winner in her last start t [ here, left the gate in fifth place and moved j toward the leading Miss Ethel gradually to 5 offer her a stiff battle in the last stages. Victory March, longest-priced one in the j race, moved up from behind to take show r j j honors. The winning "Daily Double" paid 1.20, I | being comprised of the winning combination I | i of Miss Ethel in the first and Hall and , I Fetzers Jolo in the second race. f | | I • r , | " j ! | i j | j | j | j j .
