Y., May 26 A crowd of nearly 15,000 assembled at Belmont Park this afternoon to see Mrs. Ogden Phipps Bath easily master a clever field for the winners end of ,275 in the Corinthian Steeplechase, and Mrs. Payne Whitneys Derby winner, Shut Out, qualify impressively for the Belmont Stakes as he spotted older Suburban hopefuls weight and beat them off in the nine-furlong Ballot Handicap. The hedge affair was the days nominal feature, but was deprived of much of its lustre when Cottesmore was withdrawn. In this "about two miles" Mrs. Phipps ,500 bargain fencer won at the direct expense of Pete Bost-wicks Sussex and Harry Lamontagnes Lechlade. Shut Out breezed in the Ballot five widening lengths, in front of W. L. Branns Challedon, his nearest rival, while Louis Mayers Anzac, Reading II., was third, another five lengths away. Third Degree, stablemate of the winner, brought up the rear. Both Shut Out and Bath were hugely popular victors, the former paying .40 and the fencer .50. Both hung out very fast time. Baths 3 :42 was only two and a fifth seconds off the course record, while Shut Outs 1:48 was a mere two-fifths behind Hot Toddys track standard. Goes Out Mile and Quarter Shut Out was slapped twice with the whip passing the finish just to keep him interested, and worked on out to a mile and a quarter in 2:02 for his encounter with Alsab. Equipoises son packed the scale of 112 and gave Challedon two pounds, the other two eight each. The days program was unusually attractive and the crowd of 14,712 represented a substantial increase over the 10,960 on hand the similar afternoon last spring. In addition to todays two features, Jock Whitneys two-year-old Picket served notice hes among the better newcomers when he galloped to a clever field of his age in which was his second victory in as many starts. This colt also was a strong public preference. Shut Out was pounds and lengths best in the Ballot.
