The Nizam Gains Honors In Inaugural at Omaha Favored Par Avion Half-Length Short of Basnetr Racer ar Wire OMAHA, Neb., May 26. The Nizam, racing in the silks of R. Basnett, was returned the winner in the Ak-Sar-Ben Inaugural Handicap, which was run as the sixth event on the opening days eight-race program. The game son of Hallucination and Our Pet was kept close to the pace for the first half mile then, when ready, moved up on the inside, closed strongly in the final furlong to win by a half length over the swiftly-closing Par Avion. The latter, sporting the colors of E.. A. Simpson, got up in the final stride to take the place money from O. K. Mullen. The time for the six furlongs was 1:11, flat, the fastest time of the afternoon. The race was run before one of the largest opening day crowds to attend this course. The Daily Double, that popular form of wagering which has always been well played here at Ak-Sar-Ben in previous years, resulted in a large payoff of 95.40 for when May Keen, an outsider in the betting, and Anna Grand accounted for the first two races of the afternoon on the opening days racing of the. current 30-day meeting. May Keen, sporting the silks of R. A. and L. Owen, took command soon after the start and just lasted in the final drive to win by a scant nose from the swiftly-closing Royal View. Lorena Seth got up to get the show award in the last few strides. The second end of the Double was accounted for by Anna Grand, from the stable of Miss B. Goff. This seven-year-old mare, ridden by Eddie Plesa, closed with a rush to outgame C. C. Curtiss. The latter finished a neck in front of Tyro Lad, who got up in the final drive to take down the-third money. Eddie Plesa, an apprentice from Omaha, the pilot of Anna Grand, rode his first winner on a recognized track. The lad is 16 years of age and is under contract to M. Whitebrook.
