Whirlaway Accomplishes Mile And Eighth Trial in 1:53 3-5 Calumet Luminary Breezing Throughout Suburban Prep Our Boots Also Works i ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., May 26. Whirl-away, whose exciting stretch runs have made him among the most popular and formidable entertainers on the contemporary turf scene, went through his final important trial for Saturdays Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park this mornign. Sporting Warren Wrights colors, the 1941 champion was brought to the main course by trainer Ben Jones and aired along a mile and a furlong in 1:53. Clockers timed him in :50, 1:14 and 1:40. He was only breezing throughout his move, which was the best of the day by a Suburbanite and of unusual importance because Whirlaway will be the starting top weight under 129 pounds and the public choice of the week-ends 0,000 Memorial Day headliner. If Mrs. Payne Whitney is represented in the history-making mile and a quarter it follows that her contract rider, Eddie Ar-caro, will not be available to steer Whirl-away, with whom he teamed up to win the "triple crown" and the more recent Dixie Handicap at Pimlico. At the moment the Suburban status of the Greentree eligibles is in some doubt. The only other Suburban trial of any consequence today was that turned in by Roy Martins Our Boots, a formidable rival for Whirlaway in their two-year-old campaigns. The son of Bull Dog breezed over the same nine-furlong ground as did the noted Chicagoan, with clockers snapping their watches in 50, 1:16,. 1:42 and 1:54. Weathered old Steve Judge did not require Our Boots to extend himself at any stage of this jaunt. His charge ordinarily has acquitted himself best when "fresh." Mioland to Miss Race Bolingbroke, a Suburban possibility, opened up three furlongs in :35, obviously in preparation for a longer move tomorrow. Meanwhile the Suburban all-star field lost one of its most luminous stars when Charley Howards Mioland developed a filled leg. This untoward happening will necessitate a let-up of at least several weeks duration. In its present aspect, this 56th running of the Suburban shapes up as a memorable conflict among Whirlaway, who will carry 129 pounds; Market Wise, 124; Attention, 124; Challedon, 122; Reading II., 119; Our Boots, 114; Third Degree, 114; Swing and Sway, 110; Cant Wait, 109; Bolingbroke, 107; Staretor, 107, and perhaps the widely unsung Barrancosa and Welcome Pass, who are required to carry only 103 each. There will be some additions and probably some subtractions to this array of talent, one imagines. Third Degree and Reading n. were to have their acid test for the Suburban this afternoon and the charts of their performances in that over-nighter may be revealing. If Reading II. fails to develop any confidence in his connections that he deserves to represent movie mogul Mayer, it is proposed to start that prominent Californians grand mare, Painted Veil, who gets in under 112 pounds. The appearance of Painted Veil in the Suburban would inject much additional interest as a "battle of the sexes." Only a very few, very capable members of her sex, have won a Suburban. These were Imp in 1899, the, superb Beldame in 1905.. and the rather fortunate Bateau in 1929. JULES WESSLER Has taken over active supervision of his big stable quartered at Suffolk Downs.
