The Coaching Club American Oaks, "Americas filly Derby," will be thepiece de resistance at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon, and undoubtedly another "ge crowd will be on hand to witness the mid-week program. This will I.e the 26th running, of the Westchester Racing Associations 0,000 added special for three-year-olds of the fairer sex and the first over the trying mile and one-half route, its distance 1 aving been steadily increased througl. the years, in accordance with the greater vogue fr marathon racing. Vagrancy, heroine of the important Pim-lico Oaks, will distinguish the Coaching Club with her presence and shapes up a top-heavy public preference to impose her will upon the quintet mustered against her. William Woodwards huge daughter of Sir Gallahad in. Valkyr, b: Man o War, is reckoned a possible odds-on choice to give The Jockey Club chairmans internationally famed white with setland spots their first Coaching Clut victory. Maj. C. V. Whitneys Mackerel may prove to be stoutest of her rivals, this daughter of Equipoise being recommended by dockers reports of an especially impressive mile and one-half trial in 2:31V5 as her final prep. Bonnet Ann to Seek Honors The remaining four have done nothing remarkable, but several are lightly raced and perhaps capable of an unsuspected show of real quality. These are Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Red Rosette, J. E. Wid-eners Tribal Ruler, A. A. "Bert" Baronis Bonnet Ann and Foxcatcher Farms Copperette. Under the stakes conditions the starters must shoulder 121 pounds. The new mile and one-half distance of the Oaks renders it a truer American counterpart of the world-famed Epsom Oaks, the classic from which it is adapted. The present route also will lend the stake more public appeal, making for a start directly before the stands on the expansive mile and a half main course at the swank Nassau County park. If all the half dozen promised for the Oaks line up at starter Cassidys gate it will have a gross value of 1,025. The filly returned successful will have enhanced her credit by 5,425. The fact that there is ,000 second money, ,500 to the third horse and 50 to the fourth, along with the ever-present possibility that the favorite will encounter some misadventure, no doubt explains the presence of several of the seeming mediocre members of the group. Calumet Juveniles to Make Debuts The Oaks is the principal event on an eight-race bill, which, -of course, includes a steeplechase. The most interesting of these supporting events is, improbable as it seems, a five-furlong test for maiden juvenile colts and geldings. The unusual importance of this offering for non-winners accrues from the promised presence in the jammed field of Calumets Careless and Ocean Wave, two newcomers whose promise has preceded them to the races. Vagrancys status as an apparently invincible Oaks candidate is no mere fanciful theory, but is substantiated on the springs racing records. The long-striding mare from historic Belair scored a convincing triumph in the Pimlico Oaks and followed up that impressive performance with another equally as good in the Acorn, though she earned second money in the latter event.
