String Music Victor In Opener at Detroit Comes From Behind to Defeat Alfadildo by Length and Half DETROIT, Mich., May 26. String Music, a tour -year-old gray son of Royal Minstrel and Damassin, racing under the silks of Mrs. Earl H. Beezley, accounted for the firskrace at the Detroit Fair Grounds today before a large crowd. Superbly handled by Bobby Strange, Swing Music came to the end of the six-furlong distance a length and a half before S. S. Ganos Alfadildo, who enjoyed a two-length advantage over A. Hirschbergs Sherlock at the wire. The favored Erin Torch could do no better than finish ninth, after flattering with a display of good speed through the first half mile. Twelve colts, geldings and horses met in the sprint, and starter Bryan Steele sent the field away in good alignment. String Music was first to show out of the stalls, but the Beezley gelding dropped back during the initial quarter, while Diego Red charged up to take over the pacemaking task. Lake View Was in closest pursuit of the Stivers colorbearer at the first quarter post, while Alfadildo raced in third position. Diego Red continued to set the pace around the upper turn, with Lake View and Alfadildo clinging determinedly to their places. Entering the stretch, Diego Red had enough, and Alfadildo slipped through on the rail to take command. String Music then began his winning bid and, responding to Stranges brisk urging, soon disposed of Alfadildo and drew clear in the run to the wire. Sherlock, who had been badly outrun until reaching the final three-sixteenths, came between horses in the drive and was up to take the minor portion of the purse, as Diego Red and Lake View faltered. String Music, a recent invader from New Ox-leans, won his second purse of the 1942 meeting and returned his supporters a 3.40 straight mutuel payoff after completing his journey over the fast track in .1:12.
