Wilmington Field May Total Twelve Memorial Day Attraction at Delaware Park Will Be Run Over Six Furlongs Distance STANTON, Del., May 26. With the assignments of weights for the Wilmington Handicap, feature of Delaware Parks second day of sport on Saturday, meeting the satisfaction of horsemen, a field of 12 speedsters is expected to accept. The weights were released by Edward J. Brennan, racing secretary, late yesterday drawn from Brandwine Stables Madigama, 1941 wmner, and Pompion, Brad Brodskys Blenweed, Ella K. Brysons Joe Ray and Marksman, Howard Bruces Jay Jay, Glen Riddle Farms The Finest, Cape Cod, who was nominated by Private Grover C. Greer, Jr., Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Swan Attack, Gen. J. Fred Miles Flying Easy, J. W. Y. Martins Battle Jack, Baltimore Spring Handicap winner; Crispin Oglesbys Ocean Blue, victorious, in the Jennings Handicap Stakes; Mrs. Anthony Pelleteris Bay View, 1941 Santa Anita Handicap winner; A. J. Sacketts Richmond, Mrs. W. W. Vaughns Canroll, G. R. Watkins Clyde Tolson and George D. Wideners Overdrawn and Equalize. With few exceptions all of the aforementioned eligibles to the six-furlong dash are on the grounds and a vast majority of them will be quartered at the Stanton spacious and scenic course before tomorrow night. The Wilmington, second of the 13 stakes to be renewed during the 30-day session, will serve as a double attraction, for not only is it the first Saturday of the season, but also Memorial Day. Memorial Day and Independence Day, or July 4, are the big red letter days of Delaware Park racing. The small stands and clubhouse on these two holidays are unable to accommodate the crowds and lawns and terraces are packed to their elasticity. Doyer Stakes on Inaugural Card Headliner of the opening program on Friday will be the Dover Stakes for two-year-olds, and Brennan, after scanning the stable registrations, stated today that he expected a large field of starters. "Unlike early spring stakes where a winter campaign juvenile is considered a wizard and other northern-trained juveniles are not ready for their best, Delaware Parks two-year-old races attract youngsters slow in coming to their best," said Brennan, "Shut Outs victory last year is an example and El Chico, Eight Thirty, Teacher, War Plumage, Dauber and Johnnie Jr., are others to win or place in stakes during the tracks short history. M. C. "Ty" Shea, racing secretary at New Orleans and other tracks and Bren-nans chief assistant at Delaware Park, also arrived from Baltimore and the big task of registering the horses and issuing badges got under way. As Delaware Park operates under the rules of The Jockey Club, the stewards are sanctioned by that body. Herman P. Conkling, George Brown, Jr. and William Herron, the latter the Maryland Racing Commission representative, are the stewards and Brown and Conkling serve in Maryland, Conkling also at Rockingham Park. Several minor changes have been made to the plant, but holding all work to a minimum due to the war, many improvements decided upon last year were not started. It was necessary to re-surface the track proper and a thorough job was done. James Ross, track superintendent, who serves in the same capacity at Havre de Grace and prior to that position, held the same position at the century-old Kentucky Association track at Lexington, which is now the home of a housing project, states the track is second to none.
