Test Signator Thoroughly in Pea body Weight, Distance Are Both Greater Picks Up Eight Pounds More Than in Crete and Will Go Five-Sixteenths Farther CRETE, 111., May 26. William H. Shelley, racing secretary and handicapper at Lincoln Fields, took full cognizance of the ease with which Woolford Farms Signator won the Crete Handicap last week when he made the weights for the Francis S. Pea-body Memorial Handicap to be run here on Saturday. Signator captured the six-furlong Crete Handicap under the comparatively light weight of 106 pounds, but if he takes part in the Peabody Memorial he will have to shoulder 114 and travel five-sixteenths of a mile further, for Saturdays Decoration Day headliner is to be contested at a mile and a sixteenth. This impost is just two pounds under the top assignment of 116 given to Howard Wells Equifox, and one under that given to W. F. Mannaghs Liberty Flight. What effect the increased weight and the greater distance will have on Signators chances will remain for Saturdays race to determine, but in Florida he was an effective force in topnotch company over a route. He finished second to Mioland in the Coral Gables Handicap at a mile and a furlong and was third to The Chief and Llanero in the Ponce de Leon Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth. Royal Crusader Works Good Mile Woolford Farms chances of victory in the ,000 event are enhanced by the eligibility of Technician, who also is at, or near the peak of his form as he showed when he won the Del Prado Hotel Purse last week. He carried 115 pounds in that seven-furlong engagement and this weekend will have to pick up only 113. The R C Stables Royal Crusader, winner at Louisville of the Churchill Downs Handicap, and who has been assigned 112 pounds for the Peabody, signalized his fitness for the race when he worked a mile this morning in 1:43. Going handily, ha showed to splendid advantage and threatens to be a powerful factor in the division of the spoils. Others who may, or may not find their imposts no great disadvantage are Jake Lowensteins Heartman with 112 pounds, John Marschs Bulldinger with 105, C. U. Yaegers Pumpgun with 106, W. A. Osbornes Step By with 105, the Altadena Stables Gold Bubble with 105, -and the Arcturus Stables Pink Gal with 100. Owners and trainers of the Peabody Memorial nominees today were studying the weights which Shelley announced late yesterday and in another 24 hours the field for Saturdays stake may take definite shape. At this time it appeared likely that a field of about ten would take part. Meanwhile, the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club is making preparations to make Saturdays program the best yet offered. There are to be several attractive supporting features to make it probable that fans will see the best older sprinters and the leading two-year-olds in action, as well as the outstanding distance runners on the scene.
