Memorial Day Handicap At Omaha Taking Shape Expect Shifty Band of Sprinters to Oppose The Nizam on Week-End OMAHA, Neb., May 28. R. A. "Dick" Liegh, racing secretary and presiding steward here at Ak-Sar-Ben field, has high hopes that the Memorial Day Handicap, which will feature the eight-race program here on Saturday, May 30, will shape into one of the best races to be presented during this 30-day meeting. The Memorial Day Handicap is for three-year-olds and upwards to vie at six furlongs and should bring out the best sprinters stabled on the grounds. For the most part the horses that competed in the Inaugural Handicap on opening day will be seen in this feature. The Nizam,, which was returned the winner of that event by half a length, again will don silks for this ,200 purse. The R. Basnett gelding defeated Par Avion, who just managed to outlast the Whatley and Fogelson colorbearer, O. K. Mullen, for the place award. Both horses are likely to be seen again in the Saturday feature. Others that have been seen in action here since this meeting got under way and who will again try their luck in the Memorial Handicap are Al. G. Tarns Count dOr, Mrs. A. M. Creechs Chi and Maisco, Best Beau from the stable of J. G. Langdon, and Maihigh, who races in the interest of W. W. Guernsey. Paul Lycan, who does the conditioning of the Loma Rica Rancho horses, states that he will send the filly, Hivagold, to the past in the Memorial Day Handicap. This four-year-old filly has turned in some very impressive trials-, her last one at six furlongs, in which she traversed the distance in 1:14 flat. Another that is likely to ask for weight is Scar Leg, who races in the interests of Elwood -Thomas. This four-year-old colt has turned in some very good works, the last being at six furlongs, in which the colt went the distance in 1:13. Should the racing strip be muddy, this colt will be a hard-horse to handle. Entries for the Memorial Day Handicap will close today and weights will be allotted on Friday. . " There is little doubt about the racing public being ready to do their part in this vast war program, from the way they storm the gates to. makei this meeting a success. As this meeting is a non-profit one, with all profits going to buy equipment for the various camps in this vicinity and for yarious other civic organizations, the public is responding enthusiastically.
