Whirlaway Gets Acid Test in Suburban Hame Twenty-One For Fairmount Race Leigh Expects at Least Fifteen to Compete in Memorial Day Handicap COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 28. D. C. Burnett, general manager of the Fairmount" Park Jockey Club, announced this morning that all details were completed for the opening of the 26 days of racing beginning Saturday at Fairmount Park. The season will continue through July 4 and, as usual, there will be no racing on Mondays. Racing secretary R. A. Leighi Jr., announced there were 21 nominations for the Memorial Day Handicap, six-furlong feature on the opening-day card. It is by. far the best field nominated for an event during the present regime. Among thejstars named for the event are Mrs. James L. Chesneys Franks Boy and All True; the Rivermont Ranchs. Aunt Ellen and Rosy Brand; Carl Grahams Boss Hoss; R. L. Oldhams Beamy; the Litton Vimont and E. R. Plunkett entry of Burgoo Miss and Fetchetf the Hilltop Farm Stables Bobs . Dream and Ballinderry, and. Mrs. G. H. Emicks Book Plate and Last Call. Others named for the event and waiting for the weights to be released are Mrs. Frank Nugents Espino Gold, John Zitniks -Fergie"s Count, Sam Pershalls Florizan Beau, J. W. Marchbanka Gallant Laddie, and Mrs.C. Gregorys Gal Ann. Making up the balance of the nominees are R. R. Rob- : erts Mr. Ambassador, George T. Williams Put In. A. H. Sumerlins Tetros Jr., and C. N. Finchs Yar. Gallant Laddie Among Probables Leigh expects at least. 15 of the above to accept weights for the engagement, and when the field goes postward it probably will be the best group of horses to match strides over the local course since Col. Matt J. Winn was at- the head of Fairmount Park, when such races as the 5,000 Fair-mount Derby and other stakes of lesser value were contested over the Madison County track. The headliner will take on a foreign color as Gallant Laddie, owned by Marchbank, is a foreign-bred, and his connections are high on the son of Soleil du Midi and Peni-tenf. The foreigner trained so well in California last winter his owner thought enough of him to nominate the three-year-old for the Kentucky Derby. When brought to Kentucky to be conditioned for the Churchill Downs classic, the colt was green when he made his initial start. Although he failed to beat a horse in that event, he ran a creditable race against Valdina Alpha, Shut Out, who later won the Race of the Roses; Put In, Dogpatch and others.. Gregory believes he has a top horse in the foreigner, and with racing he expects him to improve enough to fit him for the Arlington Classic and the American Derby. Gallant Laddie has already made a record at Fairmount Park. Horsemen say he has the largest feet of any thoroughbred quartered at the local course. Seven additional stables reached here this morning from Beulah Park, and two others from the Chicago area. This just about completes the full list of horsemen who intend campaigning their charges at , Fairmount Park. Among those coming from the Ohio track were the stables of John Zitnik, Dave Christian, N. E. Shop, Mrs. James Bronhenberg, The Myrtle Maroon Stable, Cooper Phelps and J. R. Derden. From the Chicago area the L. H. Thompson horses and a division of the E. B. Shipp establishment unloaded. Zitnik found quarters for the handicap performer Fergies Count, Sister Polly, Val-lejo and Skippy McGee. The-latter races in the silks of his brother Anthony, while theothers are his own. HAL PRICE HEADLEY His homebred, Now Mandy, scored in the Anecdote Purse at Belmont Park yesterday. Now Mandy is an eligible to the Arlington Lassie Stakes.
