Two Colts and Filly in First Crop Of Foals by Imported Heliopolis English Stallion Standing at Coldstream Stud Serves -Larger Harem This Year LEXINGTON, Ky., May 28. Bred to but three mares last year, the young stallion, Heliopolis, is now the sre of three foals. Every mare served by him in his first season at stud produced, live foal and, reports E. Dale Shaffer of Coldstream Stud, all are impressive. Shaffer selected Heliopolis. Taking advantage of the opportunity tov purchase a good English race horse because of war conditions, Shaffer bought the Lord Derby-bred stallion. The Hyperion horse, winner of five races in England, was not retired to the stud until late in the breeding season last year. Because of that, he was mated with only three mares Misleading, Sun Celtic and Perini. Early this month Misleading and Sun Celtic produced bay colts and Perini foaled a bay filly. "All three are tops,-" comments Shaffer. "Naturally, I favor the colt out of Misleading. She has been an excellent producer. She is the dam of the stake winners, Idle Miss, Miss Ferdinand and Misled." The Misleading colt was the first to arrive. So impressed is Shaffer with Heli-! opplis, he has selected, good Coldstream Stud matrons for him this year. They are Lull dam of Albatross , Nimble Hoof dam of Coldstream, Evening Shadow stake winner , Top Horn, Bourlon Reel, Starless Moment dam of Tiger, Wild Waters dam of Log and Up the Creek , Passerine,. Coronium and Sweet Fern. The outside matrons being mated with Heliopolis this year are Hothead and Sun Emblem, owned by M: B. Goff ; Lady Dean, owned by Ira Tjrymon; Majel, pwned by D. B. Knox; Kitty Baker, owned by W. E. Smith; Scurry, owned by Mack Brothers; Fair Dancer, owned by R. W. Mcllvain; Ever Supreme, owned by Phil T. Chinn; Nipisquit, owned by Joseph E. Widener; Madfinis and Poseur, owned by B. M. Browning. Edina, owned by Mrs. Clyde Smith; Evensong, owned by Tollie Young; Showy Lady, owned by W. B. Miller; Transcendent, owned by D. E. Holeman; Lady Elgin, owned by Charles Nuckols; Bell Bird, owned by Joe Smith, and Sonora, owned by Joe W. Brown. The son of Hyperion raced in England at two, three and four. As a juvenile he won the Imperial Produce Stakes, defeating Blue Peter. As a three-year-old he won three stake races and was third to Blue Peter and Fox Club in the Derby, ranking fourth in the Free Handicap. Heliopolis was imported in August, 1940. After he had made one start in this country in 1941, Shaffer decided to retire him to the stud without further campaigning. In 1930 young Shaffers father, Charles B. Shaffer, imported from France the young stallion, Bull Dog. who quickly became one of the top sires in this country. If young Shaffer can pick stallions as we! us his father he will be more than satisfied.
