Pep Pep Well Well Continues Continues Winning Winning Streak; Streak; Scholarship Scholarship Outruns Outruns Fleetwing Fleetwing Foes Foes Runs Six Furlongs Of Roseben in 1:11 Calumet Colt Draws Away From Little Nip in Final Stages of Arlington Test ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 24. Calumet Farms Pep Well generated abundant speed when it counted most in the Roseben Purse here this afternoon and, catching the early leaders weary in the last quarter, he sped to a handy victory to register his fifth consecutive triumph. The clever brown son of Boswell Some Pap, who at this time appears to be Calumets lone hope for a three-year-old contender, raced the three-quarters over a track termed fast but which actually was slightly o nthe dull side in 1:11. Doug Dod-son was in the saddle, and he gave the winner a flawless ride as he steered him to a two-length score over Hal Price Headleys Little Nip, a shifty colt who was making his first start since last season, and William Helis Rippey was a tired third, just a neck back of the second horse. The Dude Disappoints Mrs. Al Gaals The Dude, who has developed into a promising sophomore, showed a disappointing performance under a timid ride by Joey Wagner. The little horse appeared full of run on the turn and moved up nicely, but Wagner just eased him along awaiting a hole that never opened. The start of the Roseben was good, but Fighting Frank, usually a rocket out of the gate, failed to display his characteristic burst and was forced to drive up from last position to gain a contending spot during the first eighth. Rippey in the meantime stepped along briskly to fashion an exacting pace. He was several lengths in the van going down the back lane, and Little Nip formed another division all by himself as he was a similar distance in front of the others. Dodson just eased along until going to the turn with Pep Well, and when he "gave him the gun" the colt moved briskly to his field. As he straightened away for the homeward drive Pep Well opened up a clear advantage, and during the late stages he was well in hand. Little Nip, although weary from chasing the pace, was up in time to catch Rippey, while The Dude was going nicely near the finish to take the fourth portion of the purse. The opening number, which served as a prep for several competitors who are eligible for Saturdays 5,000 added Pollyanna Stakes, found Mrs. Emil Denemarks Sweet Reward, who is.not among the nominations, being returned a convincing winner. J. Welshs Verona Sands finished two Continued on Page Thirty-Four Three Dots, Fighting Don Contest Sation Handicap Good Blood and Five Others Also in Arlington Park Dash Continued from Page One to finish last. The speedy gelding, who just recently returned to competition after spending several months on the sidelines, has been one of the leading sprinters and weight packers in the middle west for the last two years. Before coming here, Three Dots showed much of his old form to score a notable victory at Aqueduct. He will be well steadied with 123 pounds in the saddle. Fighting Don, who was withdrawn from the Clang because of the muddy condition of the track, prefers a card board-like racing strip and when he finds himself entered at short distances, it takes a mighty smart horse to match him. The four-year-old son of Fighting FoxBird Nest demonstrated his fitness at Hawthorne, where he raced the fastest six and. one half furlongs of the meeting to score easily over a good field. That was his first performance of the season here. He had previously raced at Florida, where on one occasion he easily trimmed the smart Occupy. Fighting Don was one of the most consistent sprinters in competition last season when he won five of his 13 races and 9,015. He finished among the first three four other times. The fact that Good Blood will represent Calumet Farm moves her up in the esteem of many, although her form this season doesnt rate her very highly. She has been away from the races for quite some time, her most recent start being on April 11 at Keeneland when she failed to show much of anything in the Phoenix Handicap. The Schwarzhaupt combine, Pukka Gin and Bell-the-Cat, probably would prefer more distance than six furlongs, but they are reported to have trained in highly satisfactory style and may be running fast in the late stages when the others are beginning to tire. Trojan Fleet is coming off a splendid winning race at Delaware Park on June 14. The gelded son of Case Ace Fleet Parade, by Man o War, appears to have found his best stride after a series of disappointments and he appears capable of furnishing strong contention. The secondary offering tomorrow will find a field of fairly good fillies and mares, three-year-olds and upward, competing at six furlongs. This is listed as the fifth race and will brin gtogether nine lassies who have on occasions shown smart foot. Those entered are Pomps Gal, First Gun, Burgoo-lette, Ariel Song, Green Shed, Nellie Weed, Chapel Bells, Artistic Rose, and Knights Gift.
