Assault Works for Empire City Stakes Clocked Half Mile In :47ts, Handily Kleberg Aces Trial Takes Place at Belmont; Seven in Todays Pocantico Handicap. JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., June 24. The champion came on the Belmont main track this morning and promptly shifted interest from tomorrows featured Pocantico Handicap to Saturdays 0,000 Empire City Stakes to be run at Jamaica. The Champion, of course, is King Ranchs Assault, who lacks only about 50,000 of Topping Whirlaways worlds money winning mark and has a chance to achieve that objective within the next two months. The winner of the "Triple Crown," Experimental Handicap, Wood Memorial and Dwyer Stakes was sent a handy half mile in :47 this morning, indicating that he is being kept on edge for the week-end stake in which he will have to carry 130 pounds. The son of Bold Venture has so thoroughly and consistently trounced his rival three-year-olds, conceding most of them appreciable chunks of weight, that it is a little hard to guess just who will oppose him in the Empire City. The possibilities appear to be limited to E. P. Taylors Windfields, who chased him home in the Dwyer; Mrs. Aksel Wichfields Cable, Col. E. R. Bradleys Be Courageous, Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Natchez and Mahout, William Helis Tidy Bid and Belair Studs Bonnie Beryl. These are no more than possibilities and it would not be surprising if not more than one or two oppose Assault on the week-end, .but the colt has become so popular that many fans will be glad of the chance to merely see him parade around the track. Tidy Bid in Pleasing Trial Tidy Bid worked on the Belmont training track this morning, going six furlongs in 1:15, handilay, and may be given another chance by his owner. Tomorrows Pocantico, a ,000 test at a mile and a sixteenth occupies the feature spot in the absence of the ,000 Nepperhan Purse which failed to fill. The handicap has attracted a field of seven, represented by six interests and is headed by Wm. Helis Bounding Home at 123 pounds. Hirsch Jacobs will saddle a pair in Isadore Biebers Oatmeal, 113, and his wifes Ayahs Boy, 111. The others are Vera S. Braggs Proof Coil, 117; John B. Thealls Flareback, 110; Carr Hatchs Be Brief, 108, and Havahome i Stables Omamax, 102. On paper, the Pocantico appears to lie . between Bounding Home and Proof Coil, with Ayahs Boy coming in for strong sup-; port. Bounding Home, who won the Bel-. mont Stakes a couple of years ago, recently scored his first victory since then, and had given earlier indications of a return to form. ; Proof Coil has several good races to his . credit since his almost fatal injury in the t Gulfstream Handicap last winter, and is a speed horse who will be favored by the shorfc Jamaica stretch and an inside post position, Ayahs boy also is in fine form.
