Pep Pep Well Well Continues Continues Winning Winning Streak; Streak; Scholarship Scholarship Outruns Outruns Fleetwing Fleetwing Foes Foes Flood Town Trails Victor by Length Lightly Weighted Gilbert Gelding Shows High Speed In Empire-at-Jamaica Dash JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y.f June 24. The horses came back to Jamaica today for the 24-day Empire City meeting and were greeted by a comparatively small opening day crowd of 23,536. The feature event was the thirty-third running of the 0,000 Fleetwing Handicap, in which George Gilbert, Jr.s -lightly-weighted Scholarship took the track at the start and ran the six furlongs in 1:10, only a fifth off the track record, to beat Edward Laskers Flood Town by a length, with Mrs. P. A. B. Wideners Polynesian, a nose away in third place. J. B. Thealls King Dorsett was three lengths farther back in fourth place in the field of eight. An outsider in the wagering, Scholarship paid 5.90 and was ridden by Arnold Kirkland. Both the attendance and the total handle were considerably below last years opening day figures, reflecting the trend that set in with the 5 per cent city tax. A total of ,899,915 was wagered on the seven races. A year ago, it was rare that the handle fell below the three millions when there was a stakes offering on the card. Flood Town First Out of Gate Mehrtens sent Flood Town out of the gate on the head end, but he was quickly passed by Scholarship, while The Doge and King Dorsett ranged up outside of the Lasker colorbearer. Scholarship continued to lead around the far turn by a slight amount of daylight, while Flood Town drew a half length before The Doge and Polynesian saved ground along the rail, moving into third place on the turn. Scholarship entered the stretch a length before Flood Town, who was striving vainly to catch him and stave off the closing bid of Polynesian. While unable to cut down Scholarships lead, Max Hirschs pensioner did manage to outlast Polynesian, who was heavily burdened under 132 pounds and lacked racing room turning into the stretch.
