I REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstan Many Upsets In Major Week-End Events Jet Pilots Defeat Stuns His Admirers Gallorette Eligible for Comely July 6 Older Horses in July 4 Limelight NEW YORK, N. Y., June 24. In a day of upsets at many tracks, New York fans witnessed one of the most thrilling duels of recent years when Gallorette and Stymie fought it out from the head of the stretch to the finish line in the Brooklyn Handicap. Rare indeed are the seasons when a filly can win such races as the Metropolitan Handicap and Brooklyn against the best older horses of the season. In the Metropolitan, this daughter of Challenger JX, won from Sirde, First Fiddle, Coincidence and others. In the Sussex Handicap, she ran second to the surprise winner, Pavot, with Stymie third. In the Brooklyn, on Saturday, Gallorette was given the acid test by the handicap champion of 1945, but, she met every challenge to outgame her rival for the major end ot the purse. Last year, the Washington Park officials endeavored to match Gallorette against Busher, but the negotiations finally fell through. Should Busher return, to continue her grand performances of last season, we believe a meeting between this pair would create even more interest than it would have last year. Gallorette is in the best shape of her entire career and, if it comes to pass that she meets Busher in the months ahead, it should prove to be one of the most thrilling races of recent years. Upsets were the order of the week-end at Arlington Park in Chicago. Making her first start since the Futurity at Belmont Park last fall, Beaugay was defeated a length and a quarter by Christiana Stables Sea Snack in the Princess Doreen Stakes. After her long layoff, it is a foregone conclusion that Beaugay should improve and we look for her to be quite a factor in the Chicago events for three-year-olds at both Arlington and Washington Parks. Even more surprising, was the showing of Jet Pilot who could do no better than fifth in the Hyde Park Stakes. But it developed that Jet Pilot, who had been undefeated in his first four starts, rapped himself in winning. Colonel OF was the surprise winner of the Hyde Park and is a feather in the cap of Teddys Comet, to say nothing of the cap of his breeder, Henry H. Knight, the master of Almahurst Farm in Kentucky. C. C. Tanner, the New Orleans sportsman, bought Colonel OF from Knight at private terms. Strangely enough, Knight was also the breeder of Tweets Boy, who ran second to Colonel OF. Knight will sell a group of yearlings at the Saratoga Sales and one of the offerings is a bay colt by Teddys Comet Jame Kemp and two others are a bay colt by Easy Mon, out of Arimar and a gray colt by Easy Mon Royal Edict. Easy Mon is the sire of Tweets Boy. Eight stake events of an attractive nature are still scheduled before the Empire City.meeting comes to a close, with the running of the East View Stakes on Saturday, July 20. On Wednesday of this week, the feature event will be the Wakefield Stakes for two-year-olds and, on Saturday, the feature will be the 0,000 Empire City Stakes, for three-year-olds, at a mile and three-sixteenths. At the time these lines were written, Max Hirsch had made no definite statement as to whether Assault will be a starter. In view of the fact that Assault has won three races of 5,000 each, he will be carrying 130 pounds and giving liberal weight to his rivals. The three-year-old champion is also an eligible for the 5,000 Choice Stakes, which will be contested at Monmouth Park by three-year-olds on Saturday, July 13. In this race, at a mile and a quarter, Assault will carry 126 pounds. It would not be surprising if Hirsch were to send Assault to the post in this race and then ship him to Chicago to prep him for the 0,000 Classic, which will be run at Arlington Park on July 27. From the viewpoint of spectator interest, the 0,000 Comely Handicap, to be run on July 6, could be one of the best races of the Empire City meeting. For fillies and mares, three-year-olds and upward, this event will be at one and one-sixteenth miles. Although it closed with 35 nominations, the names of the eligibles that stand out are Gallorette, Bridal Flower, Mahmoudess, Elpis, Recce and Earshot. At Monmouth last week-end, Mahmoudess was a surprise winner over Fair Ann and Elpis. These three finished a head and a neck apart. Last Wednesday, Col. E. R. Bradleys Bridal Flower was the winner of the Gazelle, for three-year-old fillies. It will be highly interesting to see what these fillies, who have been in the lime-Jighth, will accomplish in a race with Gallorette, who, undoubtedly, will be asked to give them considerable concession in weight. To date, Gallorette has won 7,810 and it seems almost a certainty that she will join the . 00,000 ranks for one season before winter days roll around. Three-year-olds and older horses will be very much in the hmelighht on July 4. At New York, the feature event of the day will be the 0,000 Yonkers Handicap. Down at Monmouth, they will run the 0,000 Rumson Handicap, at six furlongs. Stymie is an eligible for the Yokners, but it slated, along with Pavot, First Fiddle and other handicap stars to start in the 0 000 Massachusetts Handicap, at Suffolk Downs. Out at Chicago the 0,000 Stars and Stripes Handicap will be the magnet and the best older horses in the mid-west will have an opportunity, to contest the issue with Armed, the handicap champion of the land. There are so many rich races for three-year-olds and older horses during July that it is little more than guess trying to fathom "who will go in which." On July 4, Hollywood Park will feature the 0,000 American Handicap, for three-year-olds, and follow with the 0,000 Hollywood Derby on July 13, but older horses will come into the Hollywood picture before the month is out, for, on July 27, they will stage the 00,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, for three-year-olds and older horses, at a mile and a quarter.
